The California Highway Patrol reported a fatal head-on collision in Monterey County on May 23, 2023. The crash occurred on Highway 1 close to Molera Road in Castroville at approximately 12:30 p.m.

Details on the Fatal Head-On Collision in Monterey County

A preliminary release revealed that a 2016 Mazda CX-5 was traveling southbound on Highway 1, and at the same time, a GMC pickup truck was headed northbound. The GMC allegedly entered the oncoming traffic lane and collided with the Mazda, CHP traffic officers reported.

The GMC driver was the sole occupant of the vehicle and was treated for serious injuries at an area trauma center. The front-seat passenger of the Mazda, a resident of the state of Tennessee, age 73, was also seriously injured and treated at the hospital.

Sadly, the two other occupants of the Mazda, a rear-seat passenger, a 75-year-old from Tennessee, and the driver, a woman from Soquel, age 79, were pronounced deceased at the crash site. The California Highway Patrol has not yet released additional information due to an ongoing investigation.

Financial Recovery For Damages in a Head-On Collision Case

Getting seriously injured or losing a loved one in a motor vehicle crash can be painful and traumatic. When someone else is to blame for the car wreck, it may be difficult to move forward. Suffering injuries or losing a loved one because another party or entity committed a negligent act may bring immense devastation to an already challenging situation. Compensation through a claim for damages may not undo the pain of sustaining injuries or bring back a lost family member, but it can provide claimants with the means of covering the many damages they may have suffered due to the incident.

In a personal injury case, eligible claimants may seek reimbursement for damages associated with the incident. This may include medical bills, pain and suffering, wage loss, and other related losses. For surviving family members, a wrongful death action may seek reimbursement for loss of financial support, mental anguish, funeral service costs, medical bills (in a survival action), and more. To determine your eligibility for a claim for damages, it is recommended to discuss your case in detail in a free consultation with a skilled California accident attorney.
