Elderly Antioch Citizen Passes Away Weeks After Pedestrian Accident

Elderly Antioch Citizen Passes Away Weeks After Pedestrian Accident

Last month, there was a pedestrian vs. car accident in Antioch that left one elderly pedestrian with critical injuries. Up until recently, the seriously injured pedestrian had been transferred to various hospitals while he was fighting for his life. Sadly, the man passed away on Wednesday, April 11, 2018. We extend our heartfelt condolences to the friends and loved ones of the deceased.

Unexpected Tragedy for Antioch Family

The death of the 69-year-old male, who has been identified as Jose Olivia, has left the remainder of his family in a period of grief and bereavement. In mid-March, Jose was doing his routine walk home from work when he was struck by an oncoming vehicle.

According to the Olivia family, Jose would get off work and hop on a bus from Walnut Creek to Antioch. Jose was employed at the Hickory Pit in Walnut Creek, where he worked three days per week. On Thursday, March 16, Jose was walking home after getting dropped off at his bus stop when he was tragically struck by a car. The pedestrian vs. car accident occurred in Barmouth and Davison’s corner.

Fernando Olivia, son of Jose Olivia, admitted that he has still not seen an official police report of the incident from the California Highway Patrol (CHP). However, Fernando insisted that the accident was not a hit-and-run. Jose had to be transferred to three different medical facilities in the weeks that he fought for his life. Fernando reported that Jose was put into a coma and never regained consciousness after the collision.

Last weekend, the Olivia family made the difficult choice to remove all medical aid that was keeping Jose alive. The collision caused severe head trauma, along with injuries to his leg, hip, pelvis, ribs, jaw, and neck. He also suffered a broken ankle as well as fractured cheekbones. It became clear that he would not recover from such extensive injuries following the accident.

Helping the Olivia Family Through Hard Times

Fernando Olivia had been on a Hawaiian vacation with his family when they received news of this heartbreaking incident from the CHP. Fernando was with his wife and two daughters as they tried to immediately get home to see Jose. They spent two days on the island working to secure an emergency flight home with the airlines.

The grieving Antioch family hopes for help and kindness from their community as they try to manage this unforeseen tragedy. They started a GoFundMe page to help raise money that will pay for Jose’s medical bills and funeral services. Any donations for this cause will be greatly appreciated by Jose’s sons.
