Driver Arrested for DUI After Fatal Yreka Accident

On Thursday, January 7, 2021, a Yreka accident led to the tragic death of a vehicle passenger and left one other person with major injuries. The Siskiyou County Sheriff’s Office has yet to identify the decedent and will reportedly do so after notifying their next-of-kin. California Highway Patrol (CHP) has indicated that one of the drivers involved in the incident has been placed under arrest on charges of driving under the influence.

Crash Details

CHP reports state that this collision happened at around 1:30 a.m. on Highway Interstate 5. A man from San Pablo was driving southbound on the highway in a Toyota Prius of an unreported year. Police indicated that the Prius was traveling at around 70 miles per hour to the south of Montague Road.

According to police, the Prius veered to the west and eventually exited the road, continuing west across an on-ramp. The vehicle finally drove off the edge of the on-ramp and onto the shoulder, where it crashed into a parked big-rig. The crash caused extreme damage to the Prius.

Response

The collision was immediately reported to CHP, who rushed response personnel to the site. Upon arrival, officers found that both occupants of the Prius had suffered major injuries, and both men were rushed to a nearby hospital to receive medical treatment. Sadly, the passenger later lost his life while at the hospital.

The driver of the big-rig was reportedly sleeping inside of the cabin of his truck when the crash happened. No reports indicated that he suffered injuries as a result of the incident.

After conducting initial investigations, CHP placed the injured driver under arrest on charges of DUI, causing deadly injuries. At the time of reporting, the driver remained in the custody of the Fairchild Medical Center and had not been booked into the county jail.

Investigation

CHP has indicated that their officers are still investigating the accident. Furthermore, officers have stated that, besides DUI, dangerous roadway conditions may have played a role in the accident. Police stated that temperatures were below freezing at the time of the crash and that the roadway could have been slick with ice.
