Cushing’s Syndrome Following Auto Accidents

Cushing's Syndrome Following Auto Accidents

Cushing’s Syndrome Following Auto Accidents – Cars have provided society with an immeasurable benefit that allows people to move quickly from place to place. Unfortunately, these benefits also come with a number of different responsibilities and risks. While nobody gets in the car assuming that they are going to be involved in a car accident, a collision can still happen at any time. Because of this, it is essential for everybody to be prepared. According to some statistics reported by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS):

  • In 2016, there were more than 34,000 auto accidents that resulted in one or more fatalities.
  • These car accidents led to close to 38,000 deaths in total.
  • This is about 11 deaths out of every 100,000 people in the United States.
  • On average, a fatality occurs about once for every 100 million miles traveled by cars in the United States.
  • In California, there were close to 3,400 fatal car accidents with close to 3,700 total deaths.

These statistics help to demonstrate just how serious car accidents can be. Sometimes, there are long-term complications that result from auto accidents, and one of these is called Cushing’s Syndrome.

What is Cushing’s Syndrome?

Cushing’s Syndrome is the name given to a disease that results from excess cortisol production. The hormone cortisol is produced in the adrenal glands and is essential for life. However, too much of it can result in some symptoms that may develop slowly over time. Some of these include:

  • Excess weight gain around the abdomen, between the shoulders, and in the face.
  • Pink or purple stretch marks along the abdomen.
  • The development of acne.
  • Slower healing of cuts and lacerations.

Over time, these symptoms can get worse and could lead to neurological issues, blood pressure issues, or bone fractures. Sometimes, this disease results from a car accident with serious traumatic injuries.

Cushing’s Syndrome from a Car Accident

When someone is involved in a car accident, he or she could suffer damage to the adrenal glands or to the pituitary. The pituitary is responsible for secreting ACTH, which tells the adrenal glands to produce cortisol. Damage to the pituitary could lead to an excess amount of ACTH, which can cause the adrenal glands to produce too much cortisol. Furthermore, damage to the adrenal glands could also lead to the uncontrolled production of cortisol. When this happens, Cushing’s Syndrome can develop. This disease can grow slowly over time, and people may not connect it to a trauma that occurred in the past. It is essential for everyone to know where they can turn for help during times of stress.
