Crash Hospitalizes Eureka Woman

I’m Ed Smith, a Eureka car accident lawyer. On Tuesday, January 10, 2017, a woman from Eureka was sent to a local hospital for treatment of injuries she sustained after being struck by a car that ran a red light.

What Happened?

Officers from the Eureka Police Department reported that the collision occurred at around 3 p.m. at the intersection of Broadway and Washington Streets near Don’s Rent-All and Leon’s Car Care Center. The police indicated that the accident occurred as a result of a black truck driving uninhibited through a red light while traveling down Washington Street. The injured woman had been driving her white car down Broadway when the truck was illegally in the middle of the intersection and consequentially drove her vehicle into the broadside of the passing truck.

Resulting Injuries

According to police, the woman driving the white car told medical responders that the force of the impact had caused her seatbelt to tighten which, in turn, had caused her significant pain. Medical officials decided to have her taken to the nearest hospital for treatment and screening for traumatic injuries.

Cause of Accident

The man driving the truck told responding police officers that he ran the light because his young son, who was in the car with him at the time, had been distracting him from the roadway.

Distracted Driving Statistics

Distracted driving behaviors are known to create an increase in motor vehicle accidents. Additionally, they have the ability to cause traumatic and sometimes even fatal injuries. In 2014 alone, as many as 431,000 people were recorded as being injured and some 3,179 were injured fatally in car accidents that involved distracted drivers. On top of all this, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s records indicate that 10 percent of drivers who are between the ages of 19 and 15 who were involved in auto accidents that led to fatal injuries were somehow distracted at the time of the collision.

Distracted driving is a real threat to our roadways. Motorists should refrain from activities that may distract them such as eating or drinking, grooming, reading, texting, or tending to children while operating a motor vehicle. It is safer and wiser to pull off the roadway to perform these activities.
