Chico Rollover Accident

I’m Ed Smith, a Chico car accident lawyer. On Friday, August 25, 2017, one individual was injured when a pickup truck collided with a tow truck and caused a rollover accident at a busy intersection close to Chico State University.

Accident Info

The collision reportedly happened at around 3:10 p.m. at the intersection of Ivy and West Eighth streets where CalTrans is currently installing improved traffic signals and sidewalks. According to Chico Police Department (CPD) Officer Greg Rogers, a silver Dodge pickup truck had been driving north on Ivy and pulled out from the intersection and into the path of a tow truck that had been driving west on West Eighth Street.

The collision of the two vehicles caused the Dodge to overturn and land on its roof on a sidewalk on the northwest part of the intersection.

Injuries and Damages

According to Chico Fire Department (CFD) Division Chief Jesse Alexander, responders discovered that the driver of the Dodge, who was only described by officers as a man, was found to have sustained traumatic injuries and was taken by ambulance to the Enloe Medical Center for treatment. The specific injuries that the man received were not released by authorities.

Alexander also reported that the tow truck driver did not suffer any injuries in the crash.

Both vehicles were left with major damages. Additionally, a third, uninvolved vehicle was struck during the collision and sustained damages as well.

Safety Project

CalTrans has been working on a 3.4 million dollar project to install traffic signals and improve sidewalks near West Ninth, West Eighth, and Ivy streets. The project aims to prevent collisions like this from happening as well as improve the safety of pedestrians who frequently use intersection crosswalks in the area.

The project includes what CalTrans calls sidewalk “bulb-outs”, a traffic calming measure used to extend sidewalks and reduce the crossing distance of roads and will update the area’s infrastructure in order to reach compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act. Storm Drains are being added to the area as well.

Rollover Accidents

Rollover accidents are relatively uncommon, but cause a large percentage of the nation’s auto accident fatalities. According to safercar.gov, a website built by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), rollover accidents cause 10,000 fatalities every year and account for 33 percent of all passenger vehicle deaths nationally.

NHTSA also reports that the majority of people killed in rollover accidents are found to have not been wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash. Their data shows that wearing a seatbelt can decrease the likelihood of being fatally injured in a rollover accident by 75 percent.
