More Wet Weather in the Forecast

Much of Northern California has the same weather forecast for the next few days, rain, rain, and more rain. This wet weather has local law enforcement agencies urging drivers to take extra caution when they’re behind-the-wheel.

Rainy Driving Tips

With winter in full force, the weather is sure to be wet, cold, and windy. Even after a fairly short ‘dry spell’, rainfall can create very dangerous driving conditions. When it rains, water begins to collect and pool up on top of dust, oil, and debris in the roadways that have not yet had a chance to be washed away. Below is a list of some helpful tips for driving in winter weather conditions.

Rain

  • Avoid using your vehicle’s cruise control functions in the rain.
  • If you are using your vehicle’s windshield wipers, your headlights need to be on as well. Not only do your headlights increase your visibility, but it also helps other drivers see you.
  • Pooling water tends to collect towards the outside of the lanes, try to drive towards the middle of the lane to avoid standing water.
  • If you can’t see the roadway through the water, it is not safe to drive through. Your vehicle may lose traction or be swept away. Driving your vehicle through moving water is not only unsafe, but it can cause severe damage to the electrical and engine systems.
  • Allow yourself adequate room and time to brake in the chance traffic comes to a sudden stop. Loss of visibility can occur very quickly in stormy winter conditions.
  • If your vehicle starts to hydroplane, do not brake or turn suddenly. Remove your foot from the gas pedal and allow your vehicle to slow down on its own. Always keep your steering wheel turned towards the direction of the skid. Once you have regained traction, it is safe to gently straighten the steering wheel.

Safety First

  • Always buckle up when you get into a vehicle. Take the time to ensure that each of your passengers is also using their seat belts.
  • Keep an Emergency Car Kit in your vehicle at all times.
  • If you’re planning on drinking, arrange ahead of time for a taxi or designated driver to drive you home.
  • If you will be on a long road trip, break up the driving between drivers. It’s also important to stop frequently for breaks.
  • Make sure you have adequate sleep before hitting the road.
  • Stay off your cell phone while driving. Pull over to a safe spot to use your GPS, make a call or read a message.
