Carmichael Crash Fatally Injures Woman

Woman Killed in Carmichael Accident

A head-on car crash tragically ended the life of a woman in Carmichael. A passenger died of injuries she received in a two-car crash on Wednesday, May 18, 2016, in Carmichael.

The collision occurred around 2:30 p.m. close to the intersection of Walnut and Cypress Avenues in Carmichael.

Marcus Ashford, 22, was behind the wheel of a 1998 Dodge Neon. He was headed southbound on Walnut Avenue in the left lane.

Nikolaus Berzins, 34, was behind the wheel of a 2011 Ford F-150 pickup headed northbound in the northbound left lane.

For reasons which were unclear, the Neon swerved right into the two-way left-turn lane and into the path of the oncoming pickup truck, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP).

Berzins’ was not able to avoid a crash with the Neon.

Tragically, the two vehicles collided head-on in the northbound lanes of travel.

Female Passenger Fatally Injured

A passenger riding in the front seat of the Neon, a female, was transported to Mercy San Juan Medical Center. Sadly, she passed away from the severe nature of her injuries. The woman’s identity has not been released yet. Ashford, who was driving the car with the female occupant who passed away, was also taken to Mercy San Juan Medical Center. His injuries were described as moderate, according to CHP.

Was the Driver of the Pickup Hurt?

Berzins, the driver of the pickup truck, received minor injuries but was not taken to the hospital.

What Caused the Neon Driver to Swerve?

The events leading up to Ashford swerving out of his lane remain unclear. The collision is still under investigation. It can take several days for the investigating agency to prepare a traffic collision report. When a death is involved it can take even more time.

Investigators have the task of determining whether or not drugs or alcohol played a factor in the crash.

Sometimes distracted driving can contribute to a motor vehicle collision.

Having the help of an experienced injury lawyer to assist in determining the cause of crashes like this one is crucial.

We extend our condolences to the family and friends of the woman who passed away in this tragic crash.
