Avoiding Traffic During Your Commute

California is a highly populated state, with a current estimated population of 39.5 million. Whether you’re located in the northern or southern region of the state, most of us Californians have experienced traffic jams while we’re out and about. They can be incredibly frustrating and stressful to deal with, and they commonly lead to road rage. Nobody enjoys spending their time stuck in bumper-to-bumper traffic. Below are some suggestions to save you time and avoid traffic jams on your commute.

Discover Alternative Routes

You already have a primary route, but it is recommended to have at least three different routes to one destination. Knowing multiple directions can save you time if your primary route is crowded by traffic or partially closed down for construction. There are a few options for discovering new routes – it all just depends on your preferred method for directions. You can look at a detailed map of the region, which can be accessed online or by having a handheld printed copy. You can also use word-of-mouth to find new routes. Talk to your family, friends, or even your coworkers that have on time understanding of the area.

Try Out Alternative Routes

When you have some extra time to spare, consider getting some experience on the new routes. Knowing about alternative routes will not be nearly as helpful as actually driving through them. Routes that appear to be on roads that look physically shorter on a map or GPS may actually take longer to go through depending on a wide variety of factors, including the number of driving lanes and the speed limits.

Alternate Between Times

Traffic, like most other things, tends to follow a schedule and is increasingly active in some parts of the day as compared to others. Try starting your drive a little earlier or later than usual. By alternating your timing, you can get a sense of the optimal time to drive in regards to avoiding traffic.

Look at Traffic Reports Beforehand

Live traffic reports can be accessed online as well as the radio. In addition, some apps can be downloaded to your phone that will provide users with accurate local traffic reports. These reports will help you choose which route to use for your commute. Most of these apps also include speed limit information, which will help you arrive at your destination on time.

Use a GPS Device to Receive Live Traffic Updates

These devices can be costly, but the benefits may outweigh the costs for someone that has to frequently deal with long and unpredictable commutes. Not only will you receive live traffic updates, but there are many other useful features included. They can tell you if there is an accident or road construction ahead, plus much more. GPS devices can really simplify the driving process, and that’s why they are so convenient for drivers.
