LOS BANOS, CA – On August 1, 2025, at approximately 2:18 p.m., the California Highway Patrol (CHP) Los Banos Area office responded to a report of an overturned big rig on Interstate 5.
According to a preliminary investigation, the driver of a Freightliner was traveling southbound on I-5, just south of Canyon Road, when the vehicle made a sudden left turn for reasons still under investigation. The Freightliner crossed the center median into the northbound lanes, overturned onto its side, and spilled a large load of lumber across the roadway.
At the same time, a Mercedes traveling northbound struck the debris. Fortunately, the driver of the Mercedes was not injured.
Tragically, the driver of the Freightliner sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene by emergency personnel. Our thoughts are with the driver’s loved ones during this incredibly difficult time.
It is not yet known whether alcohol or drugs played a role in the crash. The investigation is ongoing.
