Highway 24 Crash Fatally Injures Pittsburg Resident

Highway 24 Crash Fatally Injures Pittsburg Resident. California Highway Patrol (CHP) statements indicate that a single-car accident occurred late at night on Highway 24 on Sunday, October 7, 2018, and one fatality was reported. Contra Costa County Coroner’s Office has identified the deceased 22-year old male as Bobby Jones, a Pittsburg resident. Jones initially survived the accident but succumbed to his severe injuries at a hospital. The cause of the crash is still unknown. No other vehicles or people were involved in the car crash.

I want to take this moment to offer my sincere apologies and prayers to all of Jones’s loved ones that are grieving through this tragedy.

Accident Details

The accident took place around 11:46 p.m. Sunday evening in the westbound direction of Highway 24 near St. Stephens Drive. According to authorities, Jones had been driving down Highway 24 in a Kia Spectra sedan when, for unknown reasons, his vehicle veered off the road to the right. The Kia smacked into a chain link fence as well as an electrical box, which caused the car to flip over. The force of the impact ejected Jones from the car.

Jones was transferred to the John Muir Medical Center for his injuries. Unfortunately, he was seriously injured and passed away on Monday morning. Investigators are still looking into the accident to determine what caused this tragedy to occur.

Driving at Night

Many motorists will admit to being slightly less comfortable or confident in their ability to drive in the dark. Combining low visibility with any of the various risk factors that are associated with nighttime driving – such as being drowsy or the increased amount of drunk drivers on the road – it seems only fair to assume that we must drive with extra caution at night. Below are a handful of driving safety tips to follow next time you’re on the road after sundown:

  • Using Your Headlights – Headlights are your best friend on the road at night. Make a habit of turning them on an hour before dusk. During times of poor weather conditions, consider using your headlights regardless of the time of day. Not only will it help you see the road in front of you, but you also become more visible to nearby drivers.
  • Keep a Distance – This rule is always good to follow, but it is extra crucial at night. The closer your headlights are to the vehicle in front of you, the more distracted the driver may feel. If you keep a reasonable gap between your car and the one in front of you, your headlights will be less focused on the front vehicle and highlight more of the road.
  • Checking Your Surroundings – This may seem obvious, but many drivers get too comfortable with the road and forget to continuously check their mirrors. You want to be checking for other cars, motorcyclists, bicyclists, pedestrians, and stray animals.
  • Stay Awake – Even if you feel fine, most of us have an internal body clock that has adapted to get tired once it’s dark out. Take the time to learn what type of night driver you are and plan your trips accordingly.
