Eureka Man Dies in Auto Accident

I’m Ed Smith, a Eureka auto accident lawyer. A 24-year-old man from Eureka received fatal injuries as the result of a collision that occurred on Wednesday, February 28, 2018, involving a big-rig truck.

My sympathies are with those who’ve lost a loved one due to this accident.

Crash Information

The California Highway Patrol (CHP) press release regarding the incident states that the accident took place at about 11:50 a.m. Reportedly, a 1991 Mazda pickup had been driving northbound on Myrtle Avenue just north of the intersection at Pigeon Point Road. The report indicates that the driver of the Mazda allowed his vehicle to travel off of the eastern edge of the roadway. In an apparent attempt to correct, the truck subsequently drove back across both highway lanes before colliding with a steel guardrail on the road’s western edge.

After colliding with the guardrail, the pickup truck continued on into the southbound Lane of Myrtle Avenue and into the path of an oncoming 2005 Peterbilt truck with trailer. The two vehicles collided head-on and finally came to a stop on the highway, blocking both northbound and southbound lanes.

Traffic along Myrtle Avenue reportedly remained closed during response, investigation, and cleanup and was not re-opened until about 2:30 p.m.

Emergency Response

Emergency officials called in to respond to the accident reported that they discovered the driver of the Mazda inside of his vehicle with life-threatening injuries. The man was immediately transported to the nearby St. Joseph’s Hospital and given emergency medical care. However, the man’s injuries proved too severe and he passed away. The man’s identity is currently being withheld by the Humboldt County Coroner’s Office pending his next-of-kin’s notification.

A dog that had been in the pickup truck at the time of the accident appeared to be uninjured but was taken to a veterinarian for a full examination.

The driver of the big-rig, a resident of Ferndale, was reportedly not hurt during the collision.

An investigation is being conducted currently by CHP. Officers have noted that the driver of the Mazda was found to have not been wearing his seat-belt prior to the accident. CHP has also stated that, while the reason that the driver of the Mazda drifted off of the roadway remains unclear, alcohol and drugs are factors that remain under investigation.

Individuals who believe they have information pertinent to this accident are encouraged by CHP to contact the non-emergency phone line of the Humboldt Area CHP office using the number (707) 822-5981.
