Details of the Accident
On 18 April, two cars crashed into each other at the intersection of Byron Highway and Camino Diablo near Brentwood. The accident occurred shortly after 7 p.m. on Tuesday evening. East Contra Costa Fire Protection District responded to the accident at 7:22 p.m. where they found four injured people in the two vehicles.
One person was then airlifted to John Muir Medical Center while the other three victims were transported via ambulances to local hospitals. The California Highway Patrol (CHP) is investigating the accident.
4 Injured in Byron Car Accident
The specific injuries sustained in the accident have not been released, but preliminary law enforcement reports state that one person was seriously injured, two people were moderately injured, and one person sustained only minor injuries. The person with minor injuries signed out of the hospital against medical advice (AMA) the same evening of the accident while the other three stayed in the hospital.
Common Injuries in Similar Accidents
Although the specific injuries sustained in the accident are unknown, similar accidents provide an idea of the injuries likely sustained. Many victims sustain serious leg trauma, including dashboard knee. Dashboard knee is a serious injury that can impact car crash victoms for months and years following an accident.
Back or spinal cord damage is also common in serious car accidents. Even people in less serious accidents sustain minor damage like cervical spains commonly called whiplash. Some people involved in a car crash commonly sustain facial trauma from both broken glass in the vehicle and from the deployment of airbags.
Potential Cause of the Accident
The police have not released an official cause of the accident. However, speed is a common factor in many accidents occurring on the same stretch of road. Excessive speed is especially common during the evening commute when this accident occurred.
Many accidents occur at the same intersection as this accident, indicating other potential causes for this accident. The intersection of Byron Highway and Camino Diablo is poorly lit, poorly signed, and has poor visibility. These defects may be a cause for this accident.
Liability in Accidents Caused by Road Defects
Hazardous road conditions cause thousands of car accidents each year and the government entity responsible for maintaining those roads may be liable. Government organizations have an obligation to ensure the roads maintained by them are safe. This includes ensuring adequate lighting and appropriate signage warning of hazards.
Failure to provide these safety measures can be considered negligence. This negligence creates an opportunity for car crash victims to sue the government.
How a Personal Injury Law Firm Can Help
Proving city, county, or state liability in car accidents is difficult, though. A personal injury law firm can help people by investigating the area of the accident and researching political decisions surrounding the stretch of road in question.
California limits defective road liability claims to 180 days or 6 months after the date of injury or accident. This makes it essential that victims and their families contact a personal injury law firm as soon as possible.
