Antioch Resident Killed in Motorcycle Accident
I’m Ed Smith, an Antioch Wrongful Death Lawyer. A motorcyclist was fatally injured after hitting a curb and losing all control of his bike in Antioch during the early morning hours of August 7, 2018. It appears that speeding was a primary factor in the accident, according to officials. The 33-year old rider, Joseph Brandt, was pronounced deceased at the scene by emergency responders. No other vehicles or persons were reported to have been involved in the accident.
I would like to offer my sincere sympathy and prayers to those affected by the tragic loss of their loved one.
The man was riding east down Davison Drive at 12:30 a.m. when he crashed, between Serpentine Drive and Vandenberg Way. Authorities stated that the man’s motorcycle struck the south curb and he was unable to gain control of his bike afterward. Police officers that arrived at the scene found the man laying on the side of the road by a sound wall. Sadly, the man succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
Preliminary investigation reports by local authorities suggested speeding as the primary factor of the motorcycle accident. It is not yet known whether driving under the influence also played a role in the crash as a toxicology report from the autopsy is pending.
Traffic Safety Facts about Speeding
Driving over the speed limit can have serious consequences. These repercussions can range from getting pulled over and receiving a hefty ticket fine to physical trauma and sometimes death in some extreme cases. Year after year, speeding tends to rank towards the top in contributing factors to auto accidents. Here are some facts about speeding from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA):
- Speeding significantly lowers a driver’s ability to steer safely around curves or objects on the roads and increases the distance needed to stop a car.
- In 2016, speeding accounted for 27 percent of all fatal traffic accidents, and 10,111 lives were lost that same year due to speeding-related accidents.
- Approximately 50 percent of speeding drivers involved in fatal accidents in 2016 were not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the collision.
- Young males are at the highest risk of driving too fast. Motor vehicle accidents are the leading cause of death for people between the ages of 15 to 20.
- The economic costs of speeding-related collisions are estimated to be $40.4 billion annually.
Traffic Collision Reports and Error
Traffic collision reports are often wrong or inconclusive pertaining to fault in a collision. This can, unfortunately, leave surviving family members of a decedent with many, unanswered questions. It is a good idea to have an experienced wrongful death attorney perform an independent evaluation on the sequence of events leading to the crash to properly determine liability. When fault is accurately pinpointed, it can make it easier for a family to recover compensation on behalf of their loved one for someone else’s negligence.
