Two People Killed in Oroville Head-On Crash

Both a man and woman were killed in an accident on the morning of Tuesday, August 8.

Gayle Scarbrough was driving down Highway 70 in a silver Ford Taurus heading north at around 6:00 a.m. She came up behind a construction truck and decided to pass it. Scarbrough accelerated to 100 miles per hour as she crossed the dotted yellow line and moved into the oncoming lane just south of Ophir Road. Paul Inman was heading southbound to work in Marysville in a metallic orange Chevrolet HHR when the silver Ford Taurus entered his lane and smashed into his vehicle head-on. The impact killed both of the drivers involved.

Paul was an employee of the California Department of Transportation for more than sixteen years. Grief counseling is being offered by Caltrans after the accident to the employees who worked with Paul Inman.

Dangerous Road

California Highway Patrol responded to the scene. Officer Mark Stokes mentioned that 13 individuals have already died in accidents on Highway 70 this year alone between Oroville Central House road and Dam Boulevard.

On June 2 of this year, a woman died after hitting a center divider with her Chevrolet Suburban and then crossing back over the lane and rolling the vehicle on the side of the freeway. She was not wearing her seatbelt which resulted in her body being thrown from the vehicle causing fatal injuries. The CHP suspected alcohol or drug impairment while investigating the accident.

On April 25, 3 people were killed in a crash involving 4 cars and 6 people. A driver of a Nissan Frontier pickup truck tried to pass someone in front of them and as they entered the oncoming lane they hit another car head-on, similar to what happened this week although more people were involved and killed.

Bill Connelly, Butte County District 1 Supervisor is fed up with the excess of deaths on that dangerous stretch of highway. He is also chairman of the coalition in charge of transportation funds for the county of Butte. Bill hopes that a four-lane roadway connecting Oroville to Sacramento will help reduce the number of deaths and accidents that occur on Highway 70. Funding for widening Highway 70 is already underway and will be implemented in sections. There are five segments of highway that still need funding and planning.
