Tri Delta Transit Launches Electric Buses

I’m Ed Smith, an Antioch Personal Injury Lawyer. There is good news for East Contra Costa County travelers that commute through BART stations. Electric transit buses are newly available, giving BART users an additional way to get to and from stations. Two electric buses are currently up and running, but Tri Delta Transit (TDT) anticipates having a total of four buses in use by the end of the year. Together, these buses are the result of more than two years of planning, testing, and research.

Tri Delta Transit’s Pilot Program

The two electric buses that you might see traveling the roads today were built by Protera, a bus manufacturer that is leading in electric bus technology. The two additional buses that will be released towards the end of 2018 will be built by BYD Motors, a southern California bus manufacturer. Together, all four buses are part of a pilot program. This program will evaluate the performance of all four buses and the results will be assessed to determine future orders of all electric transit buses.

The new buses can hold a maximum of 38 seated passengers and 18 standing passengers. They will be used within the regular scheduled travel routes in TDT’s service areas, including Antioch, Bay Point, Brentwood, Concord, Martinez, and Pittsburg. Like all previous TDT buses, the electric buses are equipped with ramps to accommodate for those in wheelchairs and other mobility devices. There will still be priority seating for disabled persons and seniors, as well as exterior bike racks that hold up to two bicycles.

Helping the Environment One Bus at a Time

TDT are accelerating their efforts to be environmentally friendly and these electric buses are a reflection of their good-natured efforts. TDT has made a commitment to expand their ways of reducing their carbon footprint while simultaneously staying ahead of current industry trends. According to a written statement by Jeanne Krieg, CEO of TDT, these electric buses are “whisper-quiet” and should dramatically reduce noise pollution while en route. They can also travel over 100 miles on just one charge.

In addition to making choices that are environmentally smart, TDT is also making fiscally responsible decisions. Fuel and maintenance costs of regular buses are typically sky high, therefore electric buses will save the transit agency tens of thousands of dollars in this department. All the money saved from such costs will allow the agency to look at other beneficial system upgrades.

The electric transit buses have received overwhelming positive feedback from transit riders so far. Be sure to keep an eye out as you might see one at your stop the next time you’re commuting.
