Fatal Evening Accident in Brentwood

I’m Ed Smith, a Brentwood Wrongful Death Lawyer. The California Highway Patrol (CHP) is investigating a single vehicle accident that caused fatal injuries to one party on Thursday, July 5, 2018. Officers responded to reports of an accident that caused a light pole to be knocked down along the northbound section of Deer Valley Road at approximately 6:19 p.m. Upon arrival, officials discovered a fallen power pole blocking traffic lanes and a 2007 Toyota Camry in a nearby ditch. The Toyota driver was reportedly ejected from the vehicle in the collision and was, unfortunately, pronounced deceased at the scene. The identity of the victim has been withheld from the public due to pending notification of next-of-kin. However, preliminary reports suggested that the individual was a 54-year-old woman from Discovery Bay.

I would like to extend my sincere prayers and sympathy to the friends and family of the victim.

Emergency Response

Emergency response teams dispatched to the scene included CHP officers, paramedics, and the Antioch Police Department. Additionally, crew members from Pacific Gas & Electric and Contra Costa County Public Works Department were also contacted to handle road repairs and closures.

Accident Investigation

The cause of the accident remains under investigation. It is unknown whether alcohol or drugs played as contributing factors in the collision.

Summertime Driving

At first glance, it may seem safer to drive in the summer heat waves as opposed to the intimidating winter whiteouts that take place all over the country. However, a 2014 report fromĀ the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) revealed quite the opposite. The month of August had the second highest number of car accident fatalities with a total of 3,037. While August appears to be a dangerous time to drive on its own, other months of the summer season have concerning numbers as well; June, July, and September individually had more than 2,800 fatal car accidents each month. Here are some of the reasons it is dangerous to drive during theĀ summer:

  • More Teenagers Driving: When school is out, you can count on seeing younger populations behind the wheel. Unfortunately, statistics have proven year after year that younger drivers are at an increased risk of being involved in an accident;
  • Popular Time for Vacation/Road Trips: With airplane flights being expensive, many people will drive across the country for a vacation. More people on the road leads to increased traffic congestion, which may cause challenging driving conditions or even road rage. In addition, vacationing drivers who are traveling on unfamiliar roads may display unpredictable, erratic driving behavior;
  • Tire blowouts: The scorching summer sun can seriously mess with your tires. Hot weather expands the air inside your tires, which means they could fail if they are not properly inflated to the correct tire pressure. It is important to periodically inspect the condition of your tires if you live in a city that gets hit with intense heat over the summer.
