Violence Erupts During Road Rage at 10th and X Streets in Sacramento

I’m Ed Smith, a car accident lawyer in Sacramento. Recently, road rage, possibly fueled by drugs, erupted on the Capital City Freeway and ended with an arrest at a downtown intersection. The incident was captured on video by a neighborhood resident as rescue vehicles and law enforcement arrived at the scene. I would like to take this opportunity to offer my thanks that members of the Sacramento Police Department were able to stop the event before anyone was hurt.

Details of the Incident

The incident started at about 1:00 p.m. when police received a report that a Chevy Trailblazer had rammed a Ford Fiesta along the Capital City Freeway near 5th Street. The vehicles exited the freeway at 10th Street, and the Trailblazer again rammed the Fiesta. The Fiesta was able to exit the area, leaving the driver of the Trailblazer to fixate on a parked, unoccupied Honda CRV in the area where 10th intersects X Street.

Repeated Assault on a Vehicle

A local resident described the event, saying that the Trailblazer repeatedly rammed the side of the Honda, pushing it toward the open intersection by backing up to gain speed. At one point, the witness said another vehicle was traveling across the intersection, and the driver of the Trailblazer waited until the car passed before ramming the Honda again. After several moments, the driver exited the Trailblazer and jumped on the roof of the Honda and began to kick in the vehicle’s windows. At one point, the witness said the man bent over and began striking his head.

Police Intervention

Police who arrived on the scene were able to detain the man after he stumbled off the roof. He was identified as 40-year-old Jose Garcia Alvarez. He was transported to a hospital for emergency care. According to police representatives, the man may have been impaired by drugs and was considered to be violent. He was booked at the Sacramento County Jail where he was charged with felony counts of vandalism and assault.

Drug Use and Violence

Research shows that drug use and violence often are related. Some drugs change the person’s behavior more than others. The Bureau of Justice reports that the effects of drugs lead to behavioral changes while the need to continue taking the drugs often causes violent crimes. Yale University did a study of the relationship between violence and drug use spanning the years 1985 to 2014. The study showed that violence was more likely when drugs were consumed along with alcohol. It also showed that certain populations such as those with psychiatric disorders were more likely to abuse drugs.

Road Rage

Road rage is becoming more common as people are pushed to the limits of patience. From stress-related anger problems at work, home life and on the road, people react in different ways. For some, aggressive behavior, particularly on the road, is  an issue that can lead to all types of car accidents and property damage. Road rage includes a wide range of acts from rude gestures and verbal abuse to reckless driving that threatens others physically.
