Sacramento Car Accident Debris Hits Pedestrian Along Windmill Way

I’m Ed Smith, a Sacramento car accident lawyer. A recent accident along Windmill Way near an apartment complex in North Sacramento caused an injury when one vehicle collided with another, and debris struck a pedestrian. According to a representative of the Sacramento Fire Department, it occurred when one vehicle broadsided the other at the intersection into the residential area.

What Happened

The collision occurred shortly after noon between an unidentified gray sedan and a blue sedan. The California Highway Patrol (CHP) has not identified which vehicle was at fault in the crash. According to a CHP report, flying debris from the collision struck a female pedestrian, who was injured as a result. The intersection was blocked for a short time while the incident was investigated, and at least one of the vehicles was towed.

Two-Vehicle Crashes

According to a study by the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration, driver error accounts for about 94 percent of all motor vehicle accidents. Problems with the vehicles themselves account for an additional 2 percent. Environmental factors such as weather conditions account for another 2 percent. Some of the factors that can contribute to an accident are as follows:

  • Speeding: In 2016, the NHTSA estimated that speeders killed more than 10,000 people. There are good reasons for posted speed limits. This lets the driver know that the posted speed is the maximum at which a vehicle can safely be driven on that particular roadway. Speeders have a higher likelihood of losing control of the car and reacting more slowly in an emergency. In a collision, a speeding vehicle can inflict more serious injuries and a higher chance of a fatality.
  • Drunk driving: Drunk drivers accounted for 28 percent of all traffic fatalities in 2016. The more a driver has drunk alcohol, the worse the impairment behind the wheel of a car. This can include sense of judgment, reflexes, visual acuity and coordination.
  • Distracted driving: Distracted driving claimed more than 37,000 lives in 2016. It can take many forms such as texting and talking on a cell phone, accessing GPS or talking to other passengers in the vehicle instead of concentrating on the road ahead.
  • Weather conditions: Any type of weather events such as rain, sleet, fog, and snow affects the traction on a tire’s wheels and makes it harder to slow down or stop. Although weather-related events cause among the smallest number of accidents, they still do occur.
  • Drowsy driving: According to a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention survey, 4 percent of drivers admitted falling asleep behind the wheel. Drivers most likely to exhibit symptoms of drowsy driving include those who got less than six hours of sleep, work a swing shift or are commercial drivers. Persons on certain medications or who have undiagnosed sleep apnea are also more likely to doze off while behind the wheel of a car.
