Fatal Shasta Lake Pedestrian Accident

Fatal Shasta Lake Pedestrian Accident

Fatal Shasta Lake Pedestrian Accident

I’m Ed Smith, a Shasta Lake car accident lawyer. On Tuesday, June 5, 2018, Shasta County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO) authorities reported the identity of a woman who was fatally injured in a local pedestrian car accident on Friday, June 1, 2018. The fatally injured woman was identified as Bonnie Lou Tibbitts, a 79-year-old and long-time resident of the community of Shasta Lake. Authorities also reported on Tuesday that the crash is still being investigated as officers work to determine what factors were involved.

My sincere sympathy and condolences are extended to Tibbitts’ grieving loved ones as they go through this difficult period of loss.

Collision Information

SCSO said that they first received a phone call notifying them about the accident at about 11:15 a.m. The caller reportedly told officers that a vehicle had struck the Tri Counties Bank located at Shasta Dam Boulevard. As officers were on their way to respond to the crash, they learned that an elderly pedestrian had been struck during the accident.

In a report released after the accident, SCSO stated that a 58-year-old woman from Redding had apparently been trying to park her car in an empty parking space outside of the bank. While she was attempting to park, the vehicle somehow accelerated onto the sidewalk. As a result of the sudden acceleration, the car struck Tibbitts as well as an ATM located on the bank’s eastern side.

Response

Responding medics found Tibbitts with serious injuries. She was placed in an ambulance and rushed to the Redding Mercy Medical Center. However, doctors were not able to save her. Sadly, Tibbitts passed away not long after she arrived at the hospital.

No other people were reported to have been injured during this accident.

Investigation

Investigators of SCSO do not currently know why the vehicle suddenly accelerated, but have suggested that it may have been a pure accident. Officers have also said that driving under the influence is not a suspected collision factor.

People who witnessed the accident or think they may have some information that could help with the investigation are asked to contact SCSO’s non-emergency phone line, (530) 245-6540.

Wrongful Death

When someone is killed because of the negligence of another party, those responsible are often liable to pay for the damages they have caused. This is called a “wrongful death” case. The types of payments that can be claimed for wrongful death cases vary widely but cover both emotional and financial losses. Recoverable damages include loss of companionship, medical bills related to the accident, loss of inheritance money, and more.
