One Killed, One Injured in Yuba City Area Crash

I’m Ed Smith, a Yuba City car accident lawyer. Tragically, on Thursday, April 26, 2018, an accident that happened on Highway 20 northeast of the Yuba City-Marysville area left one person with fatal injuries. Also, a teenage driver was left with severe injuries. The fatally injured woman has only been identified as a 37-year-old resident of Smartsville and authorities say they will release her identity after her family has been notified. California Highway Patrol (CHP) reports that they are still investigating the crash and trying to determine the factors that caused the tragedy to occur. My sincere sympathy is with the grieving friends and family members mourning their loss after this terrible accident.

Accident Information

CHP reported that this accident happened at around 11:00 p.m. A 2013 Honda had been traveling east on State Route 20 to the east of Walnut Avenue at a high rate of speed. CHP said the Honda driver entered westbound traffic lanes and began to pass traffic by crossing over solid double yellow median lines.

For reasons that are not currently known, the driver did not merge back into the eastbound traffic lane and collided head-on with a westbound 1999 Dodge. The impact of the crash sent both vehicles spinning. The Honda overturned and finally came to a stop on its wheels with the front tires facing north. The Dodge also overturned and came to a halt on its driver’s side, also facing north.

Response and Injuries

Emergency response staff sent by CHP found the driver of the Dodge, a 17-year-old boy from Yuba City, with serious injuries. The boy was transported to the Rideout Hospital so that he could be given immediate medical treatment. No updates on the boy’s condition have been reported so far.

Responders found the Honda driver with fatal injuries and, sadly, declared her officially deceased at the scene of the accident.

Investigation

CHP has not yet reported why they believe this accident happened. However, CHP did state that they do not think alcohol or drugs were accident factors. As the investigation continues, officers may also be looking into common accident factors such as a sudden medical emergency, a defective accelerator or steering system, distracted driving, and more.

Head-On Accidents

Head-on accidents are very dangerous and nearly always cause severe or fatal injuries when one or more of the involved cars is going over 40 miles per hour. Also, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reports that head-on crashes cause more fatal injuries on rural roads than in urban areas. NHTSA’s data shows that head-on accidents are responsible for 13 percent of all deadly rural crashes while they only cause 7 percent of fatalities in urban areas.
