Major Injuries Reported in Sacramento Single Vehicle Crash

I’m Ed Smith, a Sacramento car accident and personal injury lawyer. A single-vehicle accident on May 23 caused major injuries on Fair Oaks Boulevard in the afternoon. The driver was reported as being pinned in the car, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), and emergency rescue personnel were required to extract the injured person.

What Happened

The crash happened shortly before 4:00 in the afternoon where Fair Oaks Boulevard intersects with Robertson Avenue in North Sacramento. According to the report, the driver was in a 2014 Hyundai Elantra. The injured person was transported to a hospital for medical treatment. However, no information has been released on the individual’s condition or identity or why the accident happened.

Causes of Single-Vehicle Crashes

Most, but not all, single-vehicle accidents are caused by driver error. Surprisingly enough, they most commonly happen during mundane daily driving on straight stretches of road. However, some of the other factors that can contribute to a single-vehicle crash are as follows:

  • Speeding: Drivers who are going above the speed limit are much more likely to be involved in a collision than others. This is because excessive speed increases the likelihood of an accident since the vehicle becomes more difficult to control and is harder to stop in an emergency.
  • Alcohol consumption: Those who have been drinking are more likely to have an accident than others.
  • Severe weather: Rain, snow, sleet and fog create poor visibility and make street surfaces slick.
  • Distracted driving: Talking on a phone or texting while driving contributes to many accidents. This includes hands-free phones. Other forms of distracted driving include talking to passengers, changing a radio station, accessing GPS and eating or drinking.
  • Drowsy driving: Driving while sleepy means the motorist is less alert. The driver may even fall asleep behind the wheel while on the road.

Causes of Accidents Other Than Driver Error

Sometimes, conditions besides driver error contribute to a single-vehicle crash. These include:

  • Mechanical failure: Faulty brakes, accelerator pedal, steering or airbags can cause an accident. In these cases, the manufacturer, distributor or mechanic may be liable for damages.
  • Poor road maintenance: Potholes, cracks in the road, debris and upheavals can cause a vehicle to lose its direction and crash. Government entities such as the city, county or state are responsible for the upkeep of roads and may be liable for a single-vehicle accident.
  • Aggressive drivers: Unfortunately, some drivers exhibit aggressive tendencies behind the wheel or have road rage. This can cause one driver to force another off the roadway, necessitating evasive action. In California, aggressive driving and road rage are crimes punishable by fines, jail time, loss of license or even having the vehicle impounded.

Compensation in a Single-Vehicle Accident

When an accident involving only one vehicle is caused by negligence, the injured person can seek compensation to pay medical bills and cover lost time from work, along with other expenses. An experienced injury lawyer can tell you about your right to compensation, conduct a thorough investigation and help you get the damages you deserve and need.
