Grass Valley Residents Involved in Fatal Accident

I’m Ed Smith, a Grass Valley personal injury lawyer. On the morning of Wednesday, May 2, 2018, two people lost their lives and two more suffered injuries in an area car accident. Official reports say that the crash involved two vehicles and may have been caused by distracted driving. One of the injured individuals was identified as a 17-year-old girl from Grass Valley and the other was identified as a 20-year-old woman from Dobbins. The fatally injured people have not yet been identified, but Yuba County authorities have said that one of the individuals who passed away was a 20-year-old man from Grass Valley.

I’d like to express my deep sympathy to the bereaved friends and family who are currently mourning their terrible loss.

Accident Details

California Highway Patrol (CHP) said that the crash took place at around 10:20 a.m. on Highway 49 to the southwest of Camptonville in rural Yuba County. The Dobbins woman had been driving south on the highway in a 2001 Nissan Pathfinder. She was just south of the Marysville Road intersection when she reportedly was distracted by a drink that was in the center console of her car. This distraction allegedly caused the woman to take her eyes off the road. At this time, her vehicle crossed into the oncoming lane of traffic and entered the path of a northbound 2006 Scion.

CHP noted that the Scion driver tried to avoid the crash by swerving sharply to the left. However, she was unable to steer clear of the oncoming Nissan. The Nissan struck the right-hand side of the Scion. The impact caused the Scion to travel off the eastern side of the road and 20 feet down a roadside embankment. Officers reported that the Nissan came to a stop on the highway.

Response

Emergency officials arrived at the crash scene shortly after the accident was reported to CHP. Responders found the Scion driver had not been wearing a seat belt and had suffered serious injuries. The woman was put on a medical helicopter and taken to the Sutter Roseville Medical Center to receive treatment. Despite the efforts of responders, the two passengers of the Scion were tragically pronounced deceased by officials at the scene of the crash.

The driver of the Nissan was found with what officials said were minor to moderate level injuries, but did not accept medical attention at the accident scene.

Investigation

CHP stated that neither alcohol nor drugs were involved in this crash. While distracted driving is an alleged factor, CHP is still investigating the accident to determine all of the factors that were involved. Additionally, no other vehicles were reported to be involved in the tragic crash.
