Child Hit by Car After Chasing Ball Into Sacramento Street

I’m Ed Smith, a Sacramento pedestrian accident lawyer. A pedestrian accident on May 24 in Sacramento resulted in the hospitalization of a young girl after she was struck by a car in North Sacramento. The child was reported as having severe injuries but is expected to survive. The driver of the vehicle stayed at the scene of the accident until help arrived and was reported by a witness as distraught over the injury to the child.

Accident Details

The accident occurred at Rio Linda Boulevard between Las Palmas and Alamos Avenues. A 10-year-old was playing outside around 8:00 in the evening when her ball went out into the street. Chasing after the ball, she was struck by the motor vehicle. Residents say many children live along the street. The driver involved in the incident has not been placed under arrest.

Types of Pedestrian Accident Injuries

Because pedestrians have no protection against impact with a motor vehicle, they are subject to serious injuries.

  • Injuries to the spinal cord can happen due to the force of the collision. Dislocated vertebrae or fractures may occur, which can cause lifelong damage.
  • Broken bones are a common result of a pedestrian collision with a motor vehicle. Although any bone in the body may end up fractured, the most common location is to the lower legs in an adult.
  • Traumatic head injuries from concussions to bleeding in the brain can happen because of the trauma of a pedestrian colliding with a motor vehicle. In some cases, the pedestrian is thrown back into the windshield and hurt by the impact.
  • Abdominal trauma occurs and can include injury to the liver, spleen and other organs. Injuries may also include abrasions, lacerations, bruises, and tears. The significant pain of abdominal trauma may mean the injured person not only has high medical bills but loses a considerable amount of time from work while recovering.
  • Chest trauma can occur, causing bruising, swelling and broken ribs. A broken rib can lead to a punctured lung or even damage to the heart, so this serious injury requires extensive medical care.
  • Amputation injuries occur in some pedestrian accidents. When a limb or portion of it becomes amputated due to a pedestrian accident, it can cause severe trauma both physically and psychologically. It also causes scarring and disfigurement, which may require future surgeries to repair.
  • Emotional trauma can occur in any type of accident. From sleepless nights to anxiety and depression, the emotional trauma of a pedestrian accident can be as severe as post-traumatic stress disorder.
