Brain Injuries and Quality of Life

Brain Injuries and Quality of Life

I’m Ed Smith, a Redding brain injury lawyer. Usually, when people think about the effects of a traumatic brain injury (TBI), serious medical issues come to mind. While TBIs can potentially mean a long list of expensive medications and multiple medical provider visits, there are many other complications that can arise. An injured individual may undergo issues with their quality of life resulting from a TBI further leading to major changes and stresses for their families as well. These effects vary and may include both additional responsibilities and unexpected costs.

Effects of TBI on Daily Life

When a person suffers a TBI, they are likely to develop a wide array of symptoms. These symptoms often impair the ability of survivors to take on the normal tasks of day-to-day life. For example, a person with TBI symptoms may have trouble driving a car, doing laundry, paying their bills, cooking a meal, or more. These types of problems usually mean that a caregiver or members of the survivor’s family may need to take on more responsibilities around the house.

In the best case, a TBI patient with serious, persistent symptoms have a strong network of support to depend on. Although this greatly benefits the patient, this can be a big challenge for their family as they can cause physical, emotional and mental tolls on those taking on additional responsibilities. Other circumstances, such as having another family member with a disability or raising a young child, can make it even more difficult.

Financial Stress

There are many different types of brain injuries. The symptoms from these injuries are complex and can differ from person to person. Despite these differences, all TBIs can lead to mounting medical expenses such as doctor visits, operations, medications and other treatments. There are other factors that can make medical costs rise dramatically such as having wheelchair ramps, support bars and walk-in bathtubs installed in their homes. These purchases are very important in accommodating the needs of survivors but the costs can be steep.

Another stressor that can financially affect the injured and their family is loss of work. When one of the income earners in a family suffers a TBI, the resulting symptoms can alter their ability to perform the duties of their job. In many cases, this means that the family loses a valuable source of income. On top of all this, insurance companies sometimes refuse to help with paying wages lost.

Getting Help

When dealing with the challenges of moving on after a TBI, families should never hesitate to ask for help. A lawyer with years of experience in handling TBI cases can assist in many ways including helping you find reputable in-home caregivers and negotiating with your insurance company. In the case of an injury caused by a negligent party, a brain injury lawyer can assist you in obtaining payments from those who were responsible for the injury.
