Stockton Bicycle Accident Fatality

I’m Ed Smith, a Stockton personal injury lawyer. An elderly man was riding his bicycle in south Stockton when he was struck by a motor vehicle during the afternoon of Friday, March 30, 2018. Sadly, the cyclist passed away at the scene.

Our condolences are with the family of Mr. Zameza during their time of grief.

Accident Details

Officers from the Stockton Police Department responded to the scene of a bicycle accident along Center Street and Clay Street at approximately 4:53 pm. When authorities arrived, they reportedly found a bicyclist under a Chevrolet Suburban SUV. The bicyclist was, unfortunately, pronounced deceased at the scene.

Identity of Victim

The bicyclist has been identified by the San Joaquin County Coroner’s Office as 68-year-old Jesse Zameza of Stockton.

Bicycle Accidents

Cyclists are likely to suffer serious injuries when involved in traffic accidents due to their lack of physical protection. In fact, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported that bicycle accidents accounted for nearly 467,000 cyclist-related injuries in 2015 alone. Some bicycle injuries may include liver damage, spleen injuries, bone fractures, traumatic brain injuries, or even wrongful death. Suffering any type of injury following a bicycle accident can be extremely stressful, especially when undergoing extensive rehabilitation compounded by high medical expenses. If this has happened to you or someone you love, it is crucial to discuss the details of your case with an experienced personal injury attorney in Stockton. A lawyer with years of experience can assist you in recovering fair compensation for all resulting damages.

Bicycle Safety

One of the most important responsibilities a cyclist has is to remain safe at all times. Below are some tips for ensuring your safety while riding a bicycle:

  • Wear a Helmet: Using a helmet while riding your bike is crucial in reducing your odds of suffering a head injury in the event of an accident. Those under the age of 18 are required by state law to wear a helmet that meets the standards of either the Snell Memorial Foundation or the American Society for Testing Materials. Using a helmet that fails to meet these standards is illegal.
  • Use Bike Paths Whenever Available: Bicyclists can ride in areas where bike paths are offered to avoid unnecessary collisions with motor vehicles and pedestrians.
  • Avoid Riding at Night: Riding your bike at night can be therapeutic due to the colder weather and light traffic conditions. However, this may increase a bicyclist’s chance of an accident as drivers have a harder time spotting cyclists at night. If you have to bike at night, be sure to make yourself visible to oncoming vehicles by wearing bright or reflective clothing and adding flashing lights to your bike.
