Redding Woman Injured in Douglas City Collision

I’m Ed Smith, a Redding personal injury lawyer. A Redding woman suffered serious injuries after being involved in a multiple-vehicle accident on a rural road near Douglas City on Sunday, April 8, 2018. Reports indicated that two other individuals sustained minor injuries in the crash. California Highway Patrol (CHP) released an accident report indicating that the collision occurred at about 1:55 p.m. The report states that Beverly Riddle, a 72-year-old resident of Redding, had been driving her Toyota Camry east along Highway 299 near Indian Creek when her vehicle traveled over the highway median and into the oncoming lane of traffic. The Camry reportedly collided head-on with a westbound Ford F-250 Super Duty pickup truck being driven by Gregory Pickle, a 60-year-old resident of the nearby community of Lower Lake. The collision caused the truck to travel off the side of the road and down an embankment on the northern side of the Highway. The vehicle overturned one time while it went downhill.

Response and Injuries

CHP immediately dispatched emergency personnel to the crash site after receiving notification of the collision. Responders found that Riddle had sustained serious injuries as a result of the accident and had her transported to the Mercy Medical Center for treatment.

Pickle was found with minor injuries. The passenger of Pickle’s vehicle, a 35-year-old Lower Lake resident, was also found with minor injuries. The vehicle passenger was also taken to the Mercy Medical Center.

Medical officials have not mentioned the specific natures of the injuries sustained in this accident and updates on Riddle’s condition remained unavailable at the time of this writing.

Investigation

CHP has said that neither alcohol nor drugs are believed to have been accident factors. Additionally, CHP has sugested that distracted driving may have been involved. However, an official collision investigation is still underway as officers attempt to fully understand what caused the crash.

Distracted Driving

Driving a vehicle can seem like an automatic task, and many drivers make the serious mistake of assuming that they can divide their attention between driving and other activities. However, drivers who don’t fully focus on the task of driving severely increase their chances of being involved in traumatic, and even fatal, crashes.

A 2017 report from the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) stated that nearly 50 percent of California drivers in a statewide survey reported being hit or almost hit by a driver who was either texting or talking on the phone. Ten percent of fatal crashes, as well as 18 percent of injury crashes nationwide, were reported to have involved a distracted driver.
