Redding Fatality Collisions

Redding Fatality Collisions

Redding Fatality Collisions

I’m Ed Smith, a Redding personal injury lawyer. With a population of just over 91,000 individuals, Redding is the largest city in Shasta County and one of the most populated areas in the region. Because of this, Redding is the site of a relatively high volume of vehicle traffic, and where there is traffic, accidents resulting in serious injuries and even death are always a liability. Those who frequently make use of Redding’s roadways, either as pedestrians, cyclists, or motorists, may be interested in learning about how, where, and under what circumstances fatal collisions occur in Redding. The following blog contains helpful information about Redding’s fatal accidents over recent years.

Fatal Accident Overview

During the twelve-year period spanning 2006-2017, the city of Redding was the site of 5,564 injury-causing auto accidents and 92 (1.65 percent) of these accidents resulted in one or more individuals suffering fatal trauma. Across the 92 fatal accidents, 95 individuals were killed, 8 suffered serious injuries, and 46 suffered non-severe injuries. The injured individual(s) involved in these collisions were most often vehicle drivers, while passengers were injured only slightly more frequently than pedestrians.

Redding’s fatal accidents were comprised of 7 accidents involving bicycles, 29 accidents involving pedestrians, 12 accidents involving motorcyclists, and 44 accidents involving large commercial trucks and/or passenger vehicles. Additionally, 39 of these collisions were located on a state-operated roadway within Redding city limits.

Collision Type

One of the most apparent differences between fatal and non-fatal collisions in Redding is that, while pedestrian/vehicle collisions are the most common deadly accident type and account for nearly one-third of Redding’s fatal crashes, pedestrian/vehicle collisions only account for just over five percent of Redding’s overall injury accidents.

Other common accident types to result in fatal injuries were broadside and hit-object accidents, accounting for 20.65 percent and 18.48 percent of deadly collisions respectively.

Notably, the vast majority (72.41 percent) of pedestrian fatalities occurred while pedestrians were crossing the roadway outside of designated crosswalks and pedestrian violations were the leading primary accident factor across all fatal Redding accidents.

Time of Day

Fatal Redding accidents have most often occurred after 3:00 p.m., with the highest frequency of accidents taking place between 6:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. Additionally, the most common days for these accidents to occur have been Fridays and Mondays, while weekends have seen a relatively low number of fatal crashes.
