Pseudotumor Cerebri in an Auto Accident

I’m Ed Smith, a Sacramento injury lawyer. Injuries to the head can be devastating for not only the individual but also their loved ones. There are many different types of head injuries that someone could sustain. One of the more common problems is called pseudotumor cerebri. Someone who is involved in an auto accident runs the risk of sustaining a variety of injuries. Some of these are more serious than others. Some relevant statistics to know include:

  • 55,000: Over 55,000 teenagers suffered a catastrophic personal injury in a car accident during the years of 2009 and 2010. These numbers were published by the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.
  • 30 Percent: According to this same study, 30 percent of these teens sustained severe head injuries. These include skull fractures, concussions, and even traumatic brain injuries.
  • Leading Cause of Death: The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) reports that auto accidents are the leading cause of traumatic brain injuries in children. Many of these children pass away from their injuries.

One head injury that is often overlooked is called pseudotumor cerebri.

A Review: Pseudotumor Cerebri in an Auto Accident

Pseudotumor Cerebri is a relatively common neurologic complaint; however, it does not often present following a traumatic event. Recently, a team of medical professionals published a case report of a young woman who developed this issue following a car accident. While driving down the road, she got involved in a head-on collision. Her head struck the steering wheel, and her airbag deployed. She received a thorough medical evaluation and was discharged in stable condition. Over the next few days, she developed difficulty with her vision. This is often the first sign of pseudotumor cerebri. She returned to her doctor where her sight was evaluated. After this, her intracerebral pressure was measured. This was found to be elevated. She was diagnosed with pseudotumor cerebri and placed on medications. Fortunately, she made a full recovery; however, if not diagnosed quickly, this medical condition could have serious consequences. Elevated intracranial pressure can lead to brain damage and, possibly, a herniation. It is essential for everyone to know that vision changes after an auto accident can be a severe problem.

Assistance with Head Injuries in a Car Crash

Someone who has sustained a head injury in a car accident could have many questions. Families might not know what to do if an insurance refuses to honor their claims. Speaking with a knowledgeable and caring personal injury lawyer can be helpful. The call is typically free. A lawyer understands how to negotiate with insurance companies and can make sure a full investigation into the accident can be completed. Don’t hesitate to ask for help.
