Common Intersection Accidents

There are various types of car accidents at intersections. Some of them are:

  • T-bone crashes: This type of intersection accident can be caused when a driver runs a red light or tries to beat a light that is ready to turn red.
  • Rear end accidents: These accidents happen when a driver isn’t paying attention, and the vehicle in front is stopped.
  • Crashes with oncoming vehicles: In intersections, this type of accident happens when a car is turning and the other driver is not paying attention or tries to beat the other vehicle.
  • Bicycle and pedestrian collisions: These types of intersection accidents happen when motorists fail to yield to bicyclists or walkers. In some cases, the bicycle rider or pedestrian may be at fault.
  • Side swiping: Two vehicles may sideswipe each other because of inattention to surrounding traffic.

Why Intersection Accidents Happen

According to the Department of Transportation, 43 percent of accidents happen at intersections. The Federal Highway Administration is in charge of researching improvements to make intersections safer. The City of Sacramento has been working toward making improvements at troublesome intersections. One of those is the triangle located near the entrance of Sacramento State University at Carlson Drive and H and J Streets. This area has been the site of many complaints and several deaths. Most intersection accidents are caused by human error such as the following:

  • Tailgating causes many accidents when the vehicle in front suddenly slows or stops.
  • Non-working tail lights do not advise drivers behind that a vehicle is braking.
  • Weather conditions such as fog, rain or snow can affect visibility.
  • Distracted driving such as texting, changing a radio station or eating in the vehicle draws away the driver’s attention long enough to crash into another car.
  • Speeding contributes to many accidents because it affects the driver’s ability to control the car, and distance from another vehicle may be misjudged.
  • Not keeping a safe distance between vehicles contributes to crashes.
  • Disobeying traffic laws includes reckless driving such as running a stop sign or red light.
  • Road conditions and poor road maintenance contributes to accidents. This includes branches that overhang signs or non-functional lights.
  • Complicated layouts of intersections contribute to auto accidents, particularly when the driver is at an unfamiliar location.
