School Bus Crash in Oroville

I’m Ed Smith, an Oroville personal injury lawyer. On February 5, 2018, a collision involving a pickup truck and a local school bus that occurred in Oroville sent two students to a hospital.

Crash Details

California Highway Patrol (CHP) officials have reported that the collision occurred shortly before 8:00 a.m. just south of Oroville at the intersection of Palermo Honcut Highway and Cox Lane. Officials say that a Palermo Unified School District bus had been driving on the highway at the same time as an elderly man was driving a pickup truck along Cox Lane.

At the intersection, the man in the pickup failed to avoid the bus and reportedly collided head-on with the broadside of the vehicle. The bus was overturned by the force of the impact and was found by responding officials on its side lying on the side of the road near the intersection.

After receiving a call alerting them of the collision, CHP dispatched a crew of emergency response officials to the site of the collision. Medics responding to the collision reported that two of the children occupying the bus, a 9-year-old boy, and 13-year-old girl, complained of pain during an initial screening. The children were put in ambulances and taken to a nearby hospital for screening and CHP has since confirmed that the children did suffer injuries.

Invisible Injuries

Sometimes, injuries sustained in accidents are immediately apparent. Injuries like facial lacerations and open fractures are obvious and individuals who receive them are given immediate care. However, some injuries aren’t always apparent directly following an accident and, if left untreated, can result in complications that are much more severe than the initial injury.

Injuries that may not be apparent at the scene of a crash include certain types of traumatic brain injuries, internal hemorrhaging, cervical sprains, and more. Because these injuries can cause complications, it is important to always receive a proper medical screening after being involved in a collision. Not only will doing so prevent further injury but refusing medical help initially can hurt your case later on when you are attempting to claim compensation from liable parties.

School Bus Accidents

Data from the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA) shows that an average of over 15 children die in school transportation-related accidents annually. Another study from the Center for Injury Research and Policy estimates that 17,000 children receive traumatic injuries in school transport accidents every year.

These types of accidents can be difficult to understand. Parents of injured children should attempt to gather as much information about the bus as they possibly can including whether or not the bus has been properly maintained, whether or not the driver was properly alert, and more.
