Prosthetic Limbs for Amputation Recovery

I’m Ed Smith, an Amputation Attorney in Sacramento. Within the world of serious injuries, some have the potential to be life-changing events that take an enormous amount of time to recover from. Because of the stress that these events can create for a family, there has been a tremendous amount of research into these injuries. One of the focuses of research in recent years has been on amputation injuries, which can have a significant impact on someone’s overall quality of life.

The Recovery Following an Amputation Injury

When someone suffers a serious traumatic injury, such as those seen in an auto accident, it is always important to enter the recovery process with an open mind. While an amputation injury has the potential to be catastrophic, there are some important pieces of advice that people can follow to provide the best chance at a successful recovery. It is vital to start the process quickly. There are typically several nerves and blood vessels that are left hanging as a result of the injury to the extremity and these need to be addressed quickly to prevent further loss of function. Skin grafts are often needed for aesthetic reasons. Once the patient has been stabilized and the injury covered, the recovery process will begin. It can be a challenge adjusting to life without an arm or leg; however, there have been advances in the field which can provide people with some improvement in their quality of life. One example is a prosthetic limb.

Prosthetics Can Restore Loss of Function

For those who don’t know, a prosthetic limb is an attachment that attempts to replace the loss of a limb, such as an arm or a leg. For those with a below the knee amputation, the prosthetic will attach to what is left of the lower leg. For an above the knee amputation, the prosthetic will attach to the femur. The same can be said of the lower arm versus the upper arm. While a prosthetic is far from a perfect replica of the limb that has been lost, it has the opportunity to restore some function. People may find that they can use their prosthetic limb to pick up objects, write, and walk. Similar to the therapy that takes place as people recover from other injuries, it will take some time to adjust to the new normal.

Help for Those with Serious Injuries

Whenever a serious injury takes place, such as the amputation injury described above, it is important to conduct a full investigation into what has happened so that a similar accident in the future can be avoided. Furthermore, amputation injuries are expensive and a full investigation could reveal other options that the family may not have known about. For this reason, it is important to speak with an experienced Sacramento Personal Injury Attorney.
