Fatal Redding Pedestrian Accident

Fatal Redding Highway Accident

Fatal Redding Highway Accident

I’m Ed Smith, a Redding car accident attorney. According to Redding Police Department (RPD) officials, a man in his 30s suffered fatal trauma as the result of a vehicle collision that occurred in south Redding on Tuesday, February 20, 2018.

We extend our sincere condolences to the family of the man who passed away in this tragic incident.

Crash Details

RPD Official Dennis Mack reported that the man had been walking across Highway 237 near Branstetter Lane between Kenyon Drive and South Bonneyview Road at approximately 7:30 p.m. when the accident took place. Mack indicated that while the pedestrian was attempting to cross the highway outside of any marked crossing area he was hit by an oncoming 2003 Hyundai Elantra traveling in the northbound highway lane.

Response and Injury

Police officers and medics arriving at the scene of the collision found the pedestrian with severe injuries and attempted to perform CPR in order to save the man’s life. However, the man was not able to be resuscitated and was pronounced deceased at the collision scene.  The identity of the pedestrian is currently being withheld pending notification of the man’s next-of-kin.

The driver of the Hyundai was not reported to have sustained any injuries. Additionally, no other persons or vehicles were involved in the accident.

Investigation

Investigating officials closed the northbound lanes of Highway 237 while they conducted preliminary investigations. Mack reported that the pedestrian had been wearing dark clothing, which may have been a crucial factor. Mack also indicated that no criminal activity is suspected at this point and that, although the driver received an evaluation from an expert in drug recognition, it was determined that no intoxicating substances were involved in the crash.

Redding Pedestrian Collisions

According to data from UC Berkeley, Redding was the site of 277 injurious pedestrian/vehicle accidents during 2006-2016. These accidents caused 26 people to lose their lives, left 51 with severe trauma, 107 with moderate injuries, and 115 with non-visible injuries.

While it may seem obvious, it bears mentioning that only six of these accidents did not involve a pedestrian injury and pedestrians accounted for over 90 percent of individuals injured during these collisions.

Additionally, the pedestrian accidents most often occurred in Redding between the hours of 3:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m.
