Drunk Driving Accident Fatally Injures Modesto Man
I’m Ed Smith, a Modesto car accident lawyer. A Modesto man and a Turlock man were driving together near Ceres on the night of Monday, February 19, 2018. The Modesto man, unfortunately, suffered fatal injuries in what appears to be a drunk driving accident.
We would like to extend our condolences to the friends and family members of the individual who passed away in this devastating accident.
A Turlock man was driving his 2001 Honda northbound along Highway 99 in the vicinity of Mitchell Road at approximately 11:25 pm. The Honda was reportedly traveling at an excess of 55 miles per hour moments before colliding with the rear corner of a 2005 International big rig. The impact of the collision caused the Honda to veer off the roadway, strike a fence and come to a rest along Rohde Road between Ceres and Keyes.
Nature of Injuries
The big rig driver, a 64-year-old Sonora man, was uninjured in the truck accident. The Turlock man driving the Honda suffered injuries reported as minor. It is not yet known whether the Turlock man was hospitalized for his sustained injuries. A 37-year-old Modesto man was riding as a passenger of the Honda at the time of the collision. Sadly, the Modesto man succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
Identity of Victim
The identity of the victim has been withheld due to pending notification of next-of-kin.
What Caused the Accident?
The exact cause of the accident is not yet known due to an ongoing investigation. Officials from the California Highway Patrol (CHP) reported that the driver of the Honda was taken into custody after allegedly showing signs of being under the influence of drugs or alcohol. The Honda driver, identified as a 30-year-old man from Turlock, has been charged with probation violation, vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and DUI causing bodily injury or death. Prior reports also indicated that Hoggatt was convicted of battery, vandalism, and burglary. His bail has been set at $250,000.
Drunk Driving Accidents and Wrongful Death
Impaired driving causes serious injury and death to those involved every year. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reported that 10,497 victims suffered fatal injuries in drunk driving accidents in 2016. Of this number, 1,233 children ages 14 and under were killed in motor vehicle accidents involving drunk drivers. Consuming alcohol prior to getting behind the wheel is never a wise choice as it affects the following functions of the brain:
- Motor Coordination
- Reaction Time
Drunk driving accidents can lead to devastating consequences. If you or a family member has sustained serious injuries in an accident caused by a drunk driver, it is imperative to discuss the details of your case with a seasoned Modesto car accident lawyer. An experienced attorney can assist you with ensuring fair compensation for all incurred damages.
