Two Injured in Multi-Vehicle Accident

Authorities of the California Highway Patrol (CHP) stated that a collision involving seven vehicles that occurred on the evening of Sunday, February 18, 2018, left two individuals with injuries.

Accident Information

Initially, CHP reported that the accident had involved five to eight vehicles. Minutes later, the number on CHP’s website climbed to 12 and, soon after, 19. However, after further investigation, CHP finally determined that seven vehicles were part of the highway pile-up. Additionally, 16 individuals were initially reported to have sustained injuries but the number was later changed to two.

Reports indicate that the collision occurred at approximately 7:15 p.m. on Highway 101 near the Samoa Boulevard exit. According to officers, heavy hail had been falling in the area when the collision occurred. While it is suspected that slippery roads and hail were the main factors in the car accident, specific details regarding how the pileup occurred have not yet been reported.

Serious Injuries

After CHP dispatchers received a call indicating that multiple people had suffered serious injuries in a highway accident, responders were sent to the accident site. After screening various individuals, responding personnel discovered that only two had suffered injuries; one possible spinal injury and one facial laceration.

Investigation and Other Accidents

The southbound section of Highway 101 was closed to traffic for about one hour while various agencies assisted with tending to individuals involved in the crash as well as clearing wreckage from the highway. CHP says that this incident remains under investigation and that officers do not suspect driving under the influence as a crash factor.

Hail also supposedly played a role in a few other area crashes that occurred the same day. In one collision, a multi-vehicle accident that happened at approximately 11:00 p.m. and involved a motorcyclist who sustained minor leg injuries. In another, a CHP patrol vehicle allegedly drove off of the roadway and into a roadside embankment at approximately 11:20 p.m. The suspect and deputy occupying the vehicle did not sustain injuries.

Spinal Injuries and Recovery

Injuries to spinal discs or vertebrae have the potential to drastically change a person’s day-to-day life. Chronic pain, loss of mobility, and even paralysis can result from a spinal injury and these symptoms can prevent people from performing daily tasks and, in many cases, their job. This is why those who suffer serious injuries because of another party’s negligent actions can recover for a variety of damages that includes lost wages, loss of income potential, rehabilitation costs, and more.
