Lincoln DUI Dangers

I’m Ed Smith, a Lincoln CA personal injury attorney. Although it is a smaller city, Lincoln CA still has quite a bit of  vehicle traffic. It’s also true that where there is vehicle traffic, there is the risk of DUI accidents. Although most people know that driving while intoxicated is dangerous, the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) indicated around 3,000 fatal DUI collisions still occur in California every year.

As a recent Lincoln accident illustrates, driving while impaired can lead to serious consequences.

Recent Lincoln DUI

The most recent DUI in Lincoln occurred on Monday, November 27, 2017. According to California Highway Patrol (CHP) Officer Tammy George, the accident occurred at around 5:55 p.m. along Industrial Avenue close to Cyber Court.

Vincent Angelo Caico, a 29-year-old Sacramento resident, had reportedly been driving his 2004 Saab when he collided with the rear-end of a Dodge Caravan. Officer George reported that Caico’s vehicle pushed the Dodge forward over 700 ft. before it lost control and veered into the path of a county deputy’s vehicle.

Accident Injuries

George stated that the deputy sustained serious injuries including a broken arm, wrist, and hand. The female passenger of the Saab suffered severe internal injuries including what may have been a lacerated liver. The driver of the van reportedly was not able to communicate with responding officials due to a major closed head injury.

Under the Influence

Officers at the scene of the accident reported that Caico had been under the influence of a narcotic substance when he caused the collision. The man was arrested on charges of resisting arrest and DUI.

As in this example, it isn’t hard to see how driving while impaired by intoxicants can cause serious accidents that otherwise could have been easily avoided. Being intoxicated can cause a driver to lose focus and miss what is right in front of them.

DUI Statistics

According to research data released by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), around one-third of fatal car accidents that occur in the United States are caused by drunk or otherwise intoxicated drivers. With around 35,000 U.S. fatal car accidents occurring every year, it can be projected that more than 10,000 lives could be saved every year if DUI came to an end.

Additionally, the DMV reports that DUI is the primary cause of auto accident fatalities in California, with 63.5 percent of auto accident deaths being caused by drunk or intoxicated drivers across the state.

Staying Safe

Avoiding DUI is something that everybody is responsible for and the best thing that one can do is to plan ahead. If you think that you might be drinking, you should always know that you have a way to get home that doesn’t endanger you or others. Having a designated driver or hailing a taxi isn’t just responsible, but can actually save lives.
