Fatal Oroville DUI Crash

I’m Ed Smith, an Oroville wrongful death lawyer. Officials from the California Highway Patrol (CHP) reported that one individual lost their life in an alleged DUI collision on Sunday, January 21, 2018, in Butte County. We would like to express our condolences to the loved ones of the individual who passed away in this tragic DUI collision.

Collision Details

According to reports, the fatal auto accident occurred at approximately 1:30 a.m. at the meeting of Las Plumas Avenue and Oro Bangor Highway near Del-Mar Rental and Landscape Supply and Robertson’s Market.

The collision reportedly happened when Lovie Shorter, a 33-year-old Oroville resident, ran a red light at the intersection and struck a vehicle being driven by Laurence Jeska, a 65-year-old Oroville man.

Investigators indicated that Shorter had been in a 2003 Chevrolet Tahoe and heading eastbound along Las Plumas Avenue when he neglected to stop at the red light marking the Lower Wyandotte Road intersection. Jeska was reported to have been driving a 2013 Toyota Tacoma and was properly navigating the intersection when the collision occurred.

Injuries

Officials reported that Jeska received fatal injuries during the accident. Additionally, Pamela Bochantin, a 35-year-old Oroville woman, had been Shorter’s passenger and received moderate injuries.

Shorter was arrested at the scene of the accident on charges of DUI and vehicular manslaughter but was released into the custody of medical officials and transported to a nearby hospital to receive emergency care for his injuries.

Investigation

Authorities are, as of now, conducting an investigation of the fatal crash. While officers have stated that DUI was a factor, other factors may have been involved as well. These factors include things like driver distraction, lack of proper roadway signage, driving at dangerous speeds, road rage, and more.

CHP is looking for more witnesses of the collision and has reported that a four-door pickup truck was spotted on security camera footage near the accident. Authorities are searching for this witness. Anybody who has information about the accident that can help officers in their investigation has been asked contact 1-800-TELL-CHP.
