Driver Dies in Solano Amtrak Collision
I’m Ed Smith, a Fairfield wrongful death lawyer. On Tuesday, January 16, 2018, a driver lost their life after being involved in a collision with an Amtrak train in Solano County. Our sympathy is extended to the friends and relatives of the fatally injured individual.
Officer Dave Harvey from the Solano Office of California Highway Patrol (CHP) reported that the collision took place shortly after 3:00 p.m. at the crossing of Batavia Road in unincorporated northwest Solano County. Harvey reported that the accident involved only one vehicle, a sedan, and only one vehicle occupant.
A spokesperson from Amtrak, Kimberly Woods, reportedly said via an email that the train, Amtrak Capitol Corridor Train 532, struck a vehicle that had been on the train tracks. She noted that 55 individual passengers had been on-board the train when the accident occurred and that no train passengers or crew members received any injuries during the incident. Woods also reported that service to the route had been “temporarily suspended” while area law enforcement officers investigated the incident.
Doug Kelly, a resident of Sacramento, had been aboard the train at the time of the accident. He told reporters that he had been “staring out the window” when he “suddenly heard a loud bang” before he noticed dark-colored debris in the air around the train.
Kelly reported that he had initially suspected that the train collided with an object along the tracks, but did not realize it had been a passenger vehicle. Kelly also noted that he saw the vehicle wedged underneath the train and that passengers were told the train would be delayed for a short time.
Another Area Amtrak Accident
This accident occurred not long after another fatal area Amtrak accident that happened on Wednesday, January 10, 2018. At around 4:00 a.m. a train traveling to Oakland from Suisun struck an as-of-yet unidentified person at a track crossing just southwest of Solano County in Richmond.
Amtrak reported that the train had been empty and that no crew members were injured. Sadly, the individual who was struck received fatal injuries.
Wrongful Death and Quick Action
When somebody dies in a wrongful death accident, family members can feel completely lost. The sudden absence of a loved one often makes people feel unable to focus on normal tasks, let alone complicated tasks like dealing with the legal aspects of a wrongful death case.
However, calling a lawyer about your case as soon as you are able is important and can be key to receiving the full amount of compensation that you deserve and are owed by law. Calling quickly can prevent guilty parties from obscuring evidence, thereby mitigating their liability for paying for damages.
