Safety Tips for Highway Driving

I’m Ed Smith, a Citrus Heights car accident lawyer. Sacramento County has a population of over 1.5 million. This means convenience and many things to do. However, it also means traffic congestion and a higher risk of a motor vehicle accident. When living in Citrus Heights, this is particularly true when driving along Interstate 80. A few tips on how to stay safer when driving along the interstate may be useful information.

California Interstate Traffic

The Federal Highway Administration reported recently that California still holds the number one spot for the most miles driven in 2016. With a total of 33.9 billion miles, this number is higher than the miles driven in 22 other states combined. Statistics by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety for 2015 showed that 57 percent of  all accidents on all types of roads involved a single vehicle. Forty-three percent involved multiple vehicles.

Stay Within the Speed Limit

Speeding is a major cause of accidents in California as it is elsewhere. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reported that 27 percent of all traffic fatalities in 2015 involved a speeder.

Don’t Drink and Drive

Twenty-nine percent of the crashes resulting in fatalities involved an impaired driver, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Sixteen percent of those deaths were to children under the age of 14. Drinking and driving is a bad combination.

Keep a Safe Distance Between Vehicles

Following too close can lead to an accident because the driver behind has less time and distance to stop in an emergency. Allow extra distance behind motorcycle riders because they can come to a stop more quickly than a motor vehicle.

Avoid Drowsy Driving

Taking a long trip to reach a favorite vacation destination or visit relatives is tiring. Make sure to take frequent rest stops to avoid drowsy driving. Pull off in a safe spot, have something to drink or eat or take a short walk to clear your head.

Avoid Distractions

Distracted driving causes accidents. Types of distracted driving include texting or talking on your cell phone, looking over at the radio to change the station and eating while driving. Intersection accidents are prone to distracted driving mistakes.

Calling a Car Accident Lawyer in Citrus Heights

Being injured in an accident caused by someone else adds to the trauma of injury by causing serious financial damage. A car accident attorney is trained to examine evidence in a crash, and use only trained professionals. These include crash reconstruction experts and expert witnesses to help build a strong case. In this way, someone who has been injured or who has lost a loved one in an accident can recover fair compensation for their loss.
