Experiencing Grief

I’m Ed Smith, a Sacramento Wrongful Death Attorney. It is never easy experiencing the loss of a loved one and many people face challenges as they try and adjust to the new reality of life without their family member or friend. When people are processing what has happened, there are a few valuable pieces of information that everyone should remember. It can ease the pain of the transition to a new normal.

Nobody Can Get Over It

When families are facing the death of a loved one, particularly after suffering a catastrophic personal injury, some may say that people simply need to get over it. This is an inappropriate response to death because it doesn’t demonstrate any compassion and nobody can simply “get over” the loss of a loved one whether it was in a traumatic auto accident or after a prolonged illness. It is important to realize that a loss is permanent and it is not an illness from which people can recover. This is a life-changing event and it will take some time for people to build their life around a new normal that no longer includes a loved one.

Common Emotions That People Experience

As people are processing what has happened, they may experience a wide variety of emotions that could look like PTSD. In addition to profound sadness, people may start crying at unexpected times. It is possible that they could have trouble sleeping at some times or display a manic amount of energy at other times. It is not unusual for individuals to have a phase of denial about what has happened or to try to place blame on others for the events, particularly if traumatic injuries were involved. These are only a few of the numerous emotions that family members and friends could display as they process the death of a loved one.

Processing Grief is Individual

Everyone deals with death and dying in a different way and it is not unusual to have questions about what has happened as they adjust to what has happened. Everyone needs to keep in mind that this is an individual process. There is no timetable for someone to have their mood return to baseline and it is inappropriate to ignore what has happened. It takes patience, acceptance, and help from others to find joy in life on the other side. People need to allow themselves and their family members to mourn the loss of their loved one appropriately and ask for help when it is needed. The loved ones who have passed on are never forgotten but continue to exist in the form of precious memories.
