I’m Ed Smith, a Woodland truck accident lawyer. On the morning of Thursday, November 30, 2017, a collision involving a big-rig truck happened along a state highway near Woodland. Sadly, the collision left one woman with fatal injuries.
We extend our sympathies to the family and friends of the woman who passed away in this crash.
California Highway Patrol (CHP) officers released a report indicating that the collision occurred at about 6:10 a.m. on Highway Interstate 5 close to the County Road 99/West Street exit. Reportedly, the driver of a big-rig truck had been heading north in the highway’s rightmost lane when he saw a Toyota parked on the right-hand shoulder. As the big-rig approached the vehicle, officers indicated that the driver of the Toyota exited her vehicle and walked into the highway in front of the truck.
The report noted that driver of the big-rig applied his brakes in an attempt to avoid colliding with the pedestrian, but was unable to stop his vehicle in time and struck her. The driver’s attempt to stop his vehicle is reportedly evidenced by large skid marks in the roadway leading to the site of the accident.
Response and Fatality
After receiving reports about the collision, CHP dispatched emergency responders to the accident site. However, when responders arrived, they discovered that the impact had left the woman with fatal injuries. She was subsequently declared dead at the scene of the crash.
According to reports, the collision caused a serious traffic delay as all northbound highway traffic was diverted to County Road 99 while officers investigated the area and tried to make some sense of this awful tragedy.
CHP is conducting an accident investigation in hopes of better understanding the factors that caused this accident to occur. Officers reported that the driver of the truck appeared to not be under the influence of drugs or alcohol. The driver was not cited for distracted driving. It was not stated if the driver of the truck was fatigued or tired leading up to the accident. Truckers are required to have adequate sleeping intervals when behind the wheel of a big rig. Officers noted the area had not been foggy at the time of the collision.
It is unknown at this time whether the woman accidentally stepped out into the path of the oncoming truck while trying to leave her vehicle to summons help or perhaps she was trying to tend to her disabled vehicle. A thorough investigation will need to take place in order to shed light on the true cause of this fatality.
Call to Action
Anybody that may have information pertinent to CHP’s investigation of this incident has been asked to contact CHP’s non-emergency phone number, 1-800-TELL-CHP. Officers have stated that any information that might help them better understand the circumstances surrounding the collision would be highly appreciated.
Wrongful Death and Quick Action
Although losing somebody that is important to you is an incredibly difficult, and sometimes debilitating, thing to endure; seeking legal assistance as soon as possible should be a priority. Responsible parties, and trucking companies especially, usually act quickly in order to obscure evidence and downplay their responsibility for a crash. Not saying that it was the truck driver’s fault, but you never know unless someone takes the time to properly investigate.
