Enjoy Festivities at the Ice Rink

I’m Ed Smith, a Sacramento auto accident lawyer. The holidays are almost here. If you are looking for something to do Thanksgiving week, check out Sacramento’s ice rink. It is perfect for family members of all ages. Bring your skates or rent a pair at the rink.

Sacramento Ice Rink General Info

The Downtown Sacramento Ice Rink is open from the beginning of November until January 15. Usually, rink hours are from 2:00 in the afternoon until 8:00 in the evening on Monday through Thursday. On the weekend that changes. On Friday, skating can be enjoyed from 10:00 in the morning until 8:00 at night. Saturday’s hours are 10:00 until 10:00 at night. If you want to build up an appetite or work off some of the Thanksgiving meal, plan on being there anytime from 10:00 till 6:00, Thanksgiving Day.

How Much Does It Cost

The cost is modest for the fun you’ll have. Admission for adults is $12 and $6 for children. For both groups, skate rentals are free. You’ll be able to rent anything else you need, including socks, gloves or an ice scooter. You can check out the price list when you arrive. The gloves and socks are $4. Private parties at the rink need to be booked ahead of time.

How to Get to the Rink

There are several ways to travel to the rink. You can take the light rail line in Sacramento or drive downtown. Parking is not hard either. You have several garages to choose from:

  • The City Hall Garage, which is located on I Street near 10th
  • The DOCO East Garage, located on 7th Street near K Street
  • Capital Garage, on the corner of L Street at 10th

Staying Safe on the Roads

Traffic during the holiday season is sometimes heavy with family and friends coming out. With the increased pressure of the holiday itself, drivers may be on edge. Together this can lead to an increased incidence of accidents and instances of road rage.

According to the U.S. Department of Transportation, the number of travel trips increases by approximately 54 percent over Thanksgiving. Ninety percent of those traveling are using passenger vehicles. In 2015, 301 fatalities occurred over the Thanksgiving weekend. Approximately half of those killed lacked seat restraints. Studies have shown that wearing seat restraints reduces the risk of death by 45 percent. If you are in a van or pickup, your risk is down 60 percent.

Tips to Safe Driving Around the Holidays

There are things you can do to avoid holiday accidents aside from wearing seat belts:

  • Don’t drink and drive. If you are at a holiday party, have a designated driver.
  • Don’t drive distracted. This accounts for up to 18 percent of fatalities.
  • Protect children. Use safety seats correctly. Remember, if the child is under 13, they need to be in the rear seat.
  • Give large trucks and buses plenty of room. Neither can stop as quickly as a passenger vehicle and need more room to maneuver. Stay out of the no zone area where trucks and buses cannot see your vehicle.
  • Don’t speed.
  • Refrain from tailgating.
  • Avoid confrontation on the highway or in urban areas.
