BMW X3 Occupant Detection Mat Recall

I’m Ed Smith, a Fresno car accident lawyer. The German automaker, BMW, has created a recall on certain Sport Utility Vehicles due to a safety defect in the passenger frontal airbag system. If the defect is unresolved, it ostensibly can increase the risk of injury or death to vehicle occupants. Every recall, minor or major, should be taken seriously and addressed immediately to ensure the safety of all motorists on the roadway.

Recall Details

BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) has issued a recall on approximately 85,302 vehicles due to a defect in the occupant detection mat of the front passenger seat. The detection mat determines how the passenger frontal air bag should deploy in the event of an automobile accident. The mat may develop cracks over time, causing the airbag system to evidently fail to register passengers.

Which Vehicles?

The following vehicles are affected by the detection mat recall:

  • 2006 to 2010: X3 2.5i, X3 3.0i, and X3 xDrive30i

Recall Remedy

Owners will be notified by BMW if their vehicle is included in the recall. Owners may have their vehicle serviced at their nearest dealer. The occupant detection mat for the front passenger seat will be replaced by dealers at no charge to owners. The recall is expected to initiate by November 20, 2017.

Airbag System Maintenance

The airbag system of an automobile is very complex. The system is powered both mechanically and electronically in modern vehicles. It is important to note that this system is susceptible to wear-and-tear due to its constant use. It is recommended that any part of an airbag system should be ordered at an authorized dealer. Obtaining vehicle parts from a salvage yard or other country may be counterfeit or included in a safety recall. Such incidents can lead to airbag system failure and the increased risk of injury to vehicle passengers.

If the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) or Airbag warning light is illuminated on the dashboard, you may want to have your vehicle inspected as soon as possible. This could mean that there may be an issue in the Airbag Control Unit, which can disable the system from deploying the airbags in an automobile accident. In order to determine the fault in the system, the vehicle has to be inspected by an experienced automobile technician or qualified service center. The computer system of the vehicle will be scanned for any repair codes that appear. The codes will determine how the vehicle should be serviced. The fix can be as easy as replacing the airbag sensor or as costly as replacing an airbag. If a motor vehicle is affected by a safety recall regarding the airbag system, the issue should be addressed and resolved immediately.
