Woman Found After Crash
Woman Found After Crash

I’m Ed Smith, an Eureka car accident lawyer. On the afternoon of Sunday, September 10, a woman reported missing to the Eureka Police Department (EPD) was found in a wrecked vehicle after a search lasting multiple days.

A Missing Person

EPD first received a missing person report on Friday, September 8, 2017, regarding a Crescent City woman by the name of Susan C. Minx. After receiving news that she was missing, EPD called on several agencies to assist in finding her.

California Highway Patrol (CHP), State and National Parks Services, and the U.S. Forest Service all began to search for Minx on Highway 101 spanning from Crescent City to Eureka, where her family indicated that she may have been driving when she went missing on September 7.

Officials were able to determine the woman’s cell phone was last signaling from an area near Prairie Creek State Park and focused their search after receiving this information.

A Person Found

At about 12:30 p.m. on Sunday, September 10, 2017,  the National Parks Service Fire Crew found Minx. When they found her, she was conscious and trapped inside her SUV, which was located 50 yards away from the highway and had traveled down a steep embankment on the side of the road before coming to a stop. The woman’s vehicle was reportedly not visible from the roadway.

When responders found the woman, they discovered that she had sustained traumatic injuries during the crash. Medics had her put in an ambulance and taken to the nearby Mad River Hospital to receive medical care. Officials noted that her injuries were not severe and that they expect the woman to fully recover.

Additionally, the woman’s two dogs were found in the vehicle. CHP’s reports don’t indicate that either of the dogs was seriously hurt.

We wish Ms. Minx a full recovery and would like to commend the dedication of all parties involved in her rescue.

Investigation

CHP is currently investigating this crash so that they can understand why Minx’s vehicle left the highway. So far, CHP has not been able to determine the causal factors of the accident. Possible factors that contributed to the crash include distracted driving, roadway defects, the actions of other negligent drivers, and more.

Staying Safe

Car accidents are liable to happen anywhere and at any time. Driving a vehicle goes hand-in-hand with the potential for an accident. However, motorists can employ safe driving practices in order to dramatically reduce their risk of being in a collision and receiving traumatic injuries.

Ways to reduce the risk of accidents include:

  • ensuring that you are well-rested before driving long distances
  • never using your phone or other mobile devices while driving
  • properly signaling before making lane-change and turning maneuvers
  • following speed limit regulations
  • allowing space between you and other drivers
