Napa Crash Hospitalizes Three

I’m Ed Smith, a Napa car accident lawyer. On Monday, August 28, 2017, a collision involving two vehicles resulted in hospitalization of three involved individuals including a young child.

Accident Details

The collision occurred at Big Ranch Road close to the intersection of El Centro Avenue at about 12:00 p.m. when Andrew Williams, a 29-year-old resident of Napa, had been driving south in a blue Toyota Corolla on Big Ranch Road. Martha Torres, a 46-year-old Napa woman had been driving her Chrysler of unidentified model in the opposite direction on the same road.

When the two vehicles passed, there was inadequate room between them and they sideswiped each other. The collision reportedly caused the Corolla to roll over. Photos from the accident show heavy damage to the front passenger side of the vehicle.

Response and Injury

California Highway Patrol (CHP) and Napa Fire Department (NFD) both responded to the incident after CHP received a report indicating that people may have been hurt in the crash. Both drivers and a child passenger were transported to the Queen of the Valley Hospital for medical attention.

The exact nature of the injuries sustained in the accident has not yet been clarified by medical officials. However, it was reported that none of the injuries appeared to be major at the crash scene.

Investigation

CHP is currently investigating the incident in order to understand what caused the vehicles to collide. Factors being investigated include the speed at which the vehicles were traveling, what sort of avoidance maneuvers the vehicles made, the conditions of the road, and more. CHP has not made any statement as to whether or not DUI is suspected in the case of this accident.

Sideswipe Collisions

Data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) shows that sideswipe collisions are common. At an annual average of around 600,000 in the United States, sideswipe accidents injure more than 50,000 and kill more than 500 people across the country every year.

Sideswipe accidents can be particularly dangerous due to the minimal amount of protection that the side of a vehicle affords occupants. Additionally, sideswipe collisions frequently turn vehicles off-course and lead to secondary collisions with other vehicles and objects such as buildings and trees.

Common Sideswipe Causes

Sideswipe collisions often happen when a vehicle is entering a new lane and strikes the side of a vehicle already occupying that lane. This can be avoided by correctly signaling ahead of time in order to let vehicles know you are changing lanes in addition to being aware of who is on the road.

NHTSA’s data also shows that DUI is the most common contributing factor to lane change accidents. This means that as always, the facts show that driving sober can help keep you safe.
