Intersection Collision in Ukiah
I’m Ed Smith, a Ukiah car accident lawyer. On Saturday, August 26, 2017, a collision at an intersection in Ukiah involving multiple passenger vehicles sent at least one individual to a hospital with traumatic injuries.
Ukiah Police Department (UPD) released a public report about the incident indicating that the accident occurred at the intersection of North State Street and Low Gap at around 12:45 p.m. A gray BMW and a silver Buick sedan both using the intersection at the same time collided with one another, leaving the BMW with serious front-end damage as well as moderately damaging the front end and side of the Buick.
Further details about how the collision occurred have not yet been reported by authorities. However, it was reported that both of the involved vehicles’ airbags deployed during the impact.
Injuries and Response
MedStar, Ukiah Valley Fire Authority, UPD, and California Highway Patrol (CHP) all dispatched responders to the site of the collision. Emergency medical personnel found that one individual had been seriously injured in the accident. The unidentified person was reportedly put on an ambulance and taken to the Adventist Health Ukiah Valley facility (formerly called Ukiah Valley Medical Center) for emergency care.
Reports on whether or not more individuals were injured in the crash, as well as on the condition and specific injuries of the hospitalized party, are not yet available.
This accident is under active investigation by the Ukiah Police Department. Officers are working to determine what factors led to the collision and have not indicated whether or not DUI is suspected. Causal factors may also include disobeying traffic signals, speeding, driving while distracted, fatigued driving, and more.
The Federal Highway Administration reports that around 2.5 million intersection accidents occur annually in the United States. Data shows that 40 percent of all vehicle accidents involve intersections, making them the second most frequent type of vehicle accident in the country behind rear-end collisions. Additionally, most accidents that occur in intersections involve left-hand turns.
Data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) shows that fifty percent of collisions involving serious injuries happen in intersections and 20 percent of those accidents are fatal.
Running Red Lights
The sad truth is that not everybody follows the rules of the road. NHTSA estimates that 165,000 accidents occur every year because of drivers who fail to stop at red lights. The annual number of fatalities that drivers ignoring red lights cause is around 750.
