Hit-and-Run Driver Detained After Fatal Crash

A two-vehicle accident occurred at an intersection in Modesto on August 23, 2017. One of the motorists immediately fled the scene following the crash. The collision, unfortunately, claimed the life of a Modesto woman.

What Happened?

A black Chevrolet SUV was headed eastbound on L Street in the vicinity of Seventh Street at about 1:45 pm. The driver of the Chevrolet allegedly drove through a red light and broadsided a northbound Ford Mustang along Seventh Street. The motorist of the Chevrolet abandoned his vehicle and fled the scene on foot.

Crash Fatally Injures Modesto Woman

The driver of the Ford, identified as 66-year-old Gloria Pearl Hawkins of Modesto, suffered major injuries and was transported to a local hospital. Sadly, Hawkins passed away during hospitalization due to the severity of her injuries.

Our deepest thoughts and condolences are with the family members of  Gloria Hawkins who passed away in this tragic hit-and-run accident.

Accident Investigation

The California Highway Patrol (CHP) is in charge of the accident’s investigation. The cause of the collision has not yet been released. Law enforcement agencies usually take one to two weeks to process a Traffic Collision Report. However, authorities were able to track down the hit-and-run driver thanks to tips from witnesses. Manuel Gonzalez, a 19-year-old Modesto man, has been recently detained on suspicion of driving a stolen vehicle, driving without a license, hit-and-run and vehicular manslaughter. The man may face additional charges as the investigation continues.

Loved One Forever Remembered

Gloria Pearl Hawkins is remembered by her family mostly for her sweet and loving personality. She always brightened up everyone she was around with her energy and joy. A GoFundMe page has been set up by the loved ones of Gloria Hawkins to cover the expenses of her funeral.

Hit-and-Run Accidents

The way a motorist behaves after an accident matters. Drivers are obligated to remain at the scene of a car accident and exchange information with one another. When a driver flees the scene, they have committed a misdemeanor or felony hit-and-run. Usually, hit-and-run drivers commit such actions due to driving under the influence, lack of automobile insurance or fear of having a warrant out for their arrest.

Drivers are also required to provide reasonable assistance to any person that may have suffered an injury at the scene. Such assistance includes contacting emergency responders. Failure to do so may result in serious charges, especially if the collision caused traumatic injuries and/or death. For more information, contact an experienced Modesto car accident lawyer.
