Crash Injures Four Near Merced County

I’m Ed Smith, a Merced car accident lawyer. A group of four were traveling back home to Weaverville from a road tip to Florida on Tuesday, September 5, 2017. The group was involved in a single vehicle accident. The collision, unfortunately, caused all of the group members to suffer traumatic injuries.

We would like to extend our thoughts and prayers for a full and swift recovery to all four people who suffered injuries in this car accident.

What Happened?

A 34-year-old man was driving his 2002 Toyota Tundra northbound along Highway 99 in the vicinity of Le Grand Road at approximately 4:00 pm. The pickup truck veered into the center divider and landed on its side along the southbound lanes of the roadway. Unfortunately, one of the passengers was ejected out of the vehicle upon impact.

Was Anybody Injured?

The motorist and two of the passengers, a 24-year-old woman and a 52-year-old man, all suffered injuries described as minor. The two passengers were treated at the Mercy Medical Center in Merced. It is not yet known whether the driver of the Toyota received medical treatment for his injuries. The passenger that was ejected out of the Toyota was identified as a 24-year-old woman. She suffered major injuries and was transported via air ambulance to the Doctors Medical Center in Modesto. An update on her condition has not yet been released.

What Caused the Crash?

The cause of the collision remains under investigation by California Highway Patrol (CHP). It is important to note that a Traffic Collision Report may take up to two weeks from the date of incident to be processed by a law enforcement agency. The report generally specifies who was at fault for an accident. The driver of the Toyota Tundra stated in an interview with the Merced Sun-Star that he felt horrible for falling asleep behind the wheel moments before the collision.

Preventing Drowsy Driving Accidents

Drowsy driving accidents occur more often than we think. An estimate by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety concluded that approximately 21 percent of fatalities resulting from motor vehicle accidents involved drowsy driving. About one third of such crashes involving a drowsy motorist resulted in injuries. The best way to prevent these accidents is to get a good night’s rest. It is best to take rest breaks during long road trips to ensure the safety of yourself and your loved ones. For more details, consult with an experienced Merced car accident lawyer.
