American Canyon Accident Statistics

I’m Ed Smith, an American Canyon Car Accident Lawyer. Residents of American Canyon live in a small city with easy access to both the metropolitan Bay Area and the gorgeous Napa Valley. Although the city itself has a population of only just over 20,000, American Canyon still has its fair share of auto accidents. Those who frequently make use of the city’s roadways may be interested in the following auto accident statistics:

Accident Overview

Data provided by researchers at UC Berkeley shows that, in the five-year period spanning from the beginning of 2012 to end of 2016, there was a total of 276 injury-causing motor vehicle accidents in American Canyon.

Of these collisions, 17 were motorcycle accidents, 16 involved pedestrians, 17 involved bicycles, and the remaining 226 collisions involved only passenger vehicles or large trucks. 173 of American Canyon’s total injury collisions occurred on a state highway within city limits, meaning that more than half of accidents resulting in injuries occurred on Highway 29.

Collisions by Severity

Collisions in American Canyon have typically been less severe than collisions in the whole of Napa County. Most strikingly, drivers in American Canyon have been involved in fatal accidents more than four times less frequently than in the county altogether. The figures for the frequency of severe injury and moderate injury accidents in American Canyon are also lower than the county average.

American Canyon’s vehicle accidents most frequently result in injuries marked by a complaint of pain from one or more people involved in a crash. Accidents of this type account for 73.91 percent of American Canyon’s total collisions associated with injury.

Collisions by Type

The most common injury-causing accident type in American Canyon has been, by a large margin, rear-end accidents. Rear-end accidents make up 50 percent of the city’s traumatic collisions, followed by broadside collisions at 21.74 percent and sideswipe collisions at 6.88 percent.

The city’s least common type of collision to leave people with injuries has been rollover accidents at 1.81 percent of total traumatic accidents. Rollover accidents are preceded by head-on accidents at 3.26 percent and pedestrian accidents at 5.8 percent.

Collisions by Violation

Sometimes, accidents are caused by factors outside of the driver’s control such as automobile defects, roadway defects, or medical emergencies. However, many dangerous collisions are caused by drivers who violate traffic laws meant to ensure safety.

American Canyon’s most threatening traffic violation is, by far, speeding. Speeding contributed to over half of injury-related vehicle accidents in the city during the five-year period, making injuries associated with speed limit violations more than seven times more common than injuries resulting from the next most-threatening violation type, traffic signal violations.
