Summertime Driving and Accidents

I’m Ed Smith, an Eureka car accident lawyer. We all know that driving presents some risk of being involved in a collision. Sometimes these collisions can result in injury. It has been shown that car accidents are more likely to occur during the summer months. There are a few factors that increase the likelihood of accidents during the summertime. As the end of summer rolls to a close, remember this can be a peak season for auto accidents.

More Traffic

During the summertime, people are typically on-the-go to vacation destinations, barbecues, swimming spots, and more. For this reason, roads tend to have more vehicles during the summer. An increase of vehicles on the road means an increase in the amount of drivers who may make mistakes that may lead to a car accident.

More Young Drivers

During the summer, teenagers with licenses aren’t busy with school and homework, meaning that they are more frequently making use of roadways. Young drivers lack experience and cause accidents more frequently than older, more experienced drivers. Teenage drivers are also more likely to make risky maneuvers and their increased presence on roadways means a higher chance of becoming involved in a car accident.

Tire Blowouts

Tire blowouts are liable to lead to collisions as they can throw vehicles off-course and leave drivers without control. Higher temperatures in summer cause tire walls to expand and become more likely to blow out than usual.

Construction Projects

Construction workers tend to be the busiest while the days are long. This means that roadways often have hazards and abnormal detours that can cause traffic confusion. More people at work on our roadways simply introduces the possibility of car accidents that may not have occurred otherwise.

Heat

High temperatures can affect drivers, especially motorcyclists. Motorcyclists riding in the summer heat can become dehydrated more easily and dehydration can lead to disorientation and confusion. Dehydrated motorcyclists are much more likely to make a mistake resulting in a serious collision.

Holiday Festivities

Summer is a time for adventure and fun. However, summer holidays like the upcoming Labor Day weekend often mean that there are more drivers on the road who are driving under the influence of alcohol. DUI causes almost one-third of all auto accident fatalities in the United States and drunk drivers always make roads more dangerous.

Staying Safe

Although there are factors that can increase the probability of having a car accident, drivers can still stay safe by doing simple things such as avoiding distraction while driving, leaving space between their vehicles and other vehicles, avoiding driving after drinking, getting enough sleep before long trips, and making sure their vehicles are in good condition and not liable to cause problems out on the road.
